If you're cable is red, white and yellow then that's "composite" cable and will only be 480. Component cable has red & white for audio and green, blue and red for video and this will display 1080

Composite-Componant....easy mistake to make when writing it out.

Definately no mistake in Video quality though!

While component cables are capable of passing 1080p, keep in mind that the majority of devices will not pass 1080p over component and no Blu-ray Discs will pass 1080p out through component, they require DVI or HDMI. In addition the majority of HDTV's will not accept 1080p over component. I believe most Samsung's do and most HP sets also.

I think you guys are off on this one. He clearly states that he get's 1080 on his cable box with those cables, component. My guess is that he's trying to upconvert with those same cables but doesn't know that HDMI is required for the copy protection on upconverting. Hence, he get's only 480.

yeah, trying to upconvert with Component cables would be a problem.

Or, possibly he has the Component cables connected into a component connection that only allows 480i/p.

Some TV's may have multiple Component connections, with only one that allows for 1080i/p sources. Perhaps he's just connected into the wrong one?

Composite is capable of PAL resolutions of 576 vertical visible lines.

As far as I know, component cables are only capable of 720p/1080i, and the wires simply cannot transfer a 1080p signal

however, i think its funny simple coax wire can easily carry 1080p and beyond

composites max at 480i, (thats why you see such a big difference, that interlace scan really hurts the picture, which would make you wonder why someone would ever use 1080i over 720p)

component cables can carry a 1080p signal. Trick is to find a component connection that will output it.
