Even with the new numbers it is still an uncomfortably close race. That isn't saying much for blu-ray when there are fewer HD-DVD players and even fewer movies available. Something is not right here. HD-DVD sales seem even stronger though the player sales are diminishing.

We all expect to make great gains for Christmas, well, so will HD-DVD. As I said before, the majority of people will wait to adopt and DVD will enjoy another win. This war hurts everyone!

I'm not sure how you can be so disappointed when blu has honestly put nothing on the market movie-wise is ages. What could you possibly expect? To me this is clearly setting up to be a 4Q whitewashing as big movies come out.

In that light, I see your point. They are saving the power move for Christmas. But so will Toshiba and their minions. (Aren't minions little onions? )

A bigger blu selection and more popular movies will make this a great golden quarter for blu. But I still envision ignorant masses standing around in the stores asking, "Where is Transformers for blu-ray? Is it sold out? When will you get more?"

I'm going to settle on the DVD version, but ONLY if it is a Christmas gift. Not spending my money on that crap anymore.

I don’t think this graph shows a winner.

The only thing that it shows is that HD-DVD can still hang with Blu-ray after all this time. It shows that HD-DVD probably isn’t going anywhere for a long time(unless Toshiba gives up). Both formats will fail if that happens and no format is the winner.

Agree. This chart does not show the 2:1 "victory" everyone claims. And over the past SEVEN weeks, Blu has trended down and HD-DVD has trended up. But it'll be the Xmas season that'll be the most revealing (as the largest percentage of retail sales happens over the holidays).

I don't think it'll take 10 years for high-def to take over DVD. I think each generation of new technology/acceptance gets shorter. The tipping point will come sooner as HDTVs become affordable.

And if the downloading of movies becomes ubiquitous (ala iTunes and music), see the possible demise of all "hard" media (i.e., disks). I haven't bought or played a CD in ... gee, I can't honestly remember. It won't be too many more years before we have "media centers" with terabytes of memory storage (probably using flash-type memory, which is faster and more reliable than harddrive technology). And our broadband speeds will either increase or compression technology will increase (or both) allowing for high-def movies to be downloaded in minutes. Ah, to be able to access any of my hundreds or thousands of movies within seconds ... one can dream.

Thanks Meziter. That's one of the best graphs I've seen yet displaying the sales trends of the 2 formats. From the group that counts the most too.
Welcome to blu-ray.com. I look forward to more of your posts.

I think one needs to see the graph in the context in which Blu-ray reached these numbers...without Fox, without MGM, and without WB giving us their true blockbuster catalog titles in the form of BB, V, the Matrix, etc. In addition, add to this the fact that Blu-ray hardware has been selling at a more expensive clip all year.

Once you look at it in this light, I think it is quite easy to see the graph going well over the 2:1 now that Fox and MGM are back in the game, Blu-ray players are going down in price, and the holiday blockbuster sales favor Blu-ray studios.

Trolls are so entertaining!! Made purely of FUD... or maybe they are just that dumb.

Sometimes I wish they didn't get banned so fast... it's fun to see them torn up by everyone

Sweet. The last four weeks have been groovy. This graph will be fun to watch as we hit the holiday season. It was nice to note that YTD is 66% to 34%.

Are there any "numbers" thread(s) in this forum? By that I mean, the physical number of units sold?
