I just had to join and reply to you and to say THANK YOU! After reading this post about the projector you scored at BB, i just had to see if I could score one for myself. I went to my local BB this past saturday and as expected, nothing. Drove over to the next closest town and checked their BB, again nothing. So on Monday I decided to arm myself with locations for as many BB's as possible and drove up to Chicago, two hours away. At the fifth BB, there was a gutted Sanyo on display with the price listed at $1099. The guy took the card and checked inventory and said none available here, but gave me the location of 3 other stores showing them as in stock and the price would be $719. I drove over to the BB and sure enough, they had the Sanyo PLV-1080HD. He said it was an return or an open box item, but it was sealed so we cut it open and checked contents, all was there, so i said ring it up. He also said since it was considered an open box I could have it for $648.
So, I am now the proud owner of a Sanyo PLV-10810HD, BB's badging of the PLV-Z700, for $648. I went from a Infocus SP5000 to this and all I can say is WOW!! The differences between my infous and the sanyo are dramatic. 1080p is all that I hoped it would be. Now, my blu-rays are just stunning. I can't thank you enough for your post ditch-digger because there is no way i would have gotten this projector for this amount. I wasn't even in the market for buying a 1080p projector until i read your post and I thought, why can't I ever find a deal like that. Well, now I have. Sorry for the long post but I just wanted you to know the story and that your post meant something for me. I am now in the process of calibrating it, but the little I did with the blu-ray DVE it looks pretty good. Can't wait to do a fullblown greyscale and color calibration this week. Thanks again, ditch-digger.

Wow you got a good deal indeed,i'm glad others are discovering this projector on here, its doesnt get mentioned on here a whole lot.I havent really tweaked mine at all,and i think the picture is great. But if you have any settings suggestions, please pass them along, thanks.

Hey PurpleJesus74 and anyone else who is interested,

here are my prelimanary calibration numbers. Just so you all know I am an amateur calibrater, so these are not set in stone. The other thing I have noticed since doing my own calibrations is what works for one may look awful for another, so please keep that in mind if anyone uses these settings.

First off, i must say this projector is pretty good out of the box. I use the Colorimetre HCFR software with a eye-one meter. I would love to post my calibration screenshots but i can't at this time, but if any one wants to tell me how to do it i would be most appreciative. I did 3 calibrations with the first and the third being the best. here is #3

brightness 0
contrast 0
color 0
tint 0
color temp user
red +13
green 0
blue -5

sharpness -3
gamma 0
iris mode 1
iris range 0
dynamic gamma off
transient low
auto stretch black low
contrast enhance off

custom gamma

gamma R 0 0 0 0 0 -1 -2 0 0
gamma G 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
gamma B 0 0 0 0 0 -3 -3 0 0

with any of the three calibrations that i did i got the color settings all below 8 which is good and the color temp tracked pretty good across the 6500 line. All in all its not too bad but there is always room to improve so aftere i get some bulb time in i will re-calibrate and see where i am at. But with all 3 calibrations i did i had to increase the red level and lower the blue levels to get the color measurement in line. There are certainly alot more items to tweak with and when i feel i have 2 or 3 days that i can leave up my meter i will do some more messing around with some of the other settings. Anyway, this is what I have gotten so far. I hope if someone uses these settings that it makes their picture better. Thats all for now. later guys

Here are the settings I'm using for my Sanyo Z700 which is identical to the 1080HD except for the case color. I got these from AVS Forum member HMS173 and made some adjustments for my setup.

Picture adj.
Overscan: 0
Screen
Full
Input
HDMI 1
Setting
Advanced menu: On
HDMI1 setup: Enhanced
Image
Natural
Image adj.
Brightness: -6
Contrast: -1
Color: 0
Tint: 0
Color temp: Default
Red: 0
Green: 0
Blue: 0
Sharpness: 0
Lamp control: A1
Gamma: +2 (improves low level detail)
Advanced menu
Iris mode: Mode 2 (darkest of the modes)
Iris range: 0 (lets the iris open completely)
Auto black stretch: Off
Contrast improvement: Off
Transient improvement: Off (anything else produced ringing)
Color management: n/a
Dynamic gamma: Off or Low (Off looks better with B&W content to me)
Custom gamma: n/a
Store: User 1

After saving, press MENU on the remote and then press USER button to select User 1 image mode.

*This next bit of info is a service menu adjustment, it will make the blacks much better on this projector. Please follow these instructions VERY VERY carefully.

The service menu change is to one of the Iris parameters. I don't know what its specific function is but it makes for a darker image. So here's how to change it...
1) On the top of the projector, simultaneously press MENU and INPUT, holding for several seconds until the letter "S" appears in the upper left corner of the screen, then release the buttons.
2) Before the "S" disappears in a few seconds, press SCREEN on the remote, holding until the service menu appears in the upper left corner of the screen.
3) The service menu should indicate User 1 image mode is active.
4) Press no buttons on either the remote or the projector except as directed in the following steps.
5) The first group showing in the service menu is group 0. Press OK on the remote to go to the next group. Press OK repeatedly until you get to group 211.
6) The first item showing in group 211 is item 0. Press the Up arrow (directly above OK) to go to the next item in the group. Press Up arrow repeatedly until you get to item 10.
7) Item 10 has different values for the different image modes, from 0 up to +100 (0 giving the blackest image). Press Left arrow (directly to the left of OK) repeatedly to lower the value of item 10 down to 0.
8) Press ON/STAND-BY on remote to save the change and exit the service menu.

If you ever want to restore the original values to item 10 of group 211, they are:
Brilliant cinema: +40
Creative cinema: +50
Natural: +100
Living: +80
Dynamic: 0 (which is why in previous tweak posts Dynamic always yielded the best black level)

After entering these settings my projector finally looks like all of those amazing screenshots I've seen posted.

Did you try the service menu adjustment? That is the key to get the darker blacks in those low light scenes. The black level is now pretty close to what I use to have with an Optoma HD70.

If you want some added "POP" to the image try turning these on low. I wouldn't go any further than low because they really start screwing up the image after that. Leave them all off for a more correct/natural looking image.

Auto black stretch: Low
Contrast improvement: Low
Transient improvement: Low
Dynamic gamma: Low

Also you may have a different value for Brightness depending on your player. My PS3 is set to -6 but my HD DVD player needed to be on -5.

Sorry for being confusing, I was trying to say:

*With the settings on low it will give you a more 3-D like image with more pop to the image, a lot of people like that, myself included for certain movies.

*With those four settings turned off it looks more like the image you would see at your local cinema, the way it was meant to be seen.

Either way they both look great, I watched Pitch Black last night with them all on low and it looked amazing!!

Ok, I finally got around to taking some pics. Some pretty good screenshots here showing how amazing blu-ray looks on a projector screen, which of course is the main reason why we got a projector.

But I thought I'd show what the AE4000 can do with measly old standard def DVD. And, bear in mind that these shots are with the DVD paused, and DVD paused doesn't look nearly as good as it does in motion. Here's a shot of Audrey Hepburn, from Breakfast at Tiffany's, which is 1.78 AR, so "full screen" on my 16:9 100" cinema gray screen:

This is the UK Region 2 PAL DVD release by Paramount, which my LG BH200 upconverts to 1080p/50 and the projector happily accepts. I use the AE4000's Frame Creation Mode 2 for standard def DVD (Frame Creation is Panasonic's marketing term for Frame Interpolation).

Now, here's a shot from The Seven Year Itch:

This is also a UK Region 2 PAL DVD, by Fox. It's aspect ratio is 2.55:1, so I use the AE4000's lens position to move the bottom of the picture to the bottom of my frame. That way I get only one (larger) black bar at the top, which is easier to ignore, and I prefer the picture more at eye level.

Now, here's what I think is one of the amazing things the AE4000 can do - here's a shot from Hotel New Hampshire:

This is a Region 1 US MGM release, upconverted on my Samsung BD-P2500 BD player with Reon processor. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1, however, like many of MGM's early DVD releases, it's non-anamorphic, so when upconverted the PQ is pretty decent, but the image annoyingly small. I always hated non-anamorphic releases - until I got my AE4000. I setup a special setting in my lens memory to zoom the image until it is full sized on my 16:9 100" screen, and with one press of the button on the remote, that postage stamp non-anamorphic DVD now looks like this:
