I thought I did careful research on this issue having a four-year-old HD set, but apparently I didn't see the fine print.
My Mitsubishi 65 inch HD set has every imiaginable input except HDMI. I get beautiful HD off the air as well as off of Cox cable and my component inputs will also play high definition. The analog component is the only way I could could connect my Sony 500 to the set for video and the audio went to my Pioneer reciever as optical digital for Dolby (which works fine), but I can't see HD on the component inputs. The Sony 500 user manual on page 47 shows the component video out will carry 1080i for Blu-ray and 480p for regular DVD. What I didn't notice was the tiny footnote 3 that says, "Outputs in the resolution of the original setting (720p or 1080i) when the DVD is not copy guarded. Then in the notes below it further explains, "480i or 480p video signals may be output when you connect to the COMPONENT VIDOE OUT jacks and play some copy-guarded BDs/DVDs. To enjoy the HD quality resolution in this case, connect the display device to the HDMI OUT jack using an HDMI cord. Since I only have component, my only hope for ever seeing HD on my set is to only play BDs that are not copy guarded. Are there any such discs? The three I bought at best buy must have it because they will only play in 480p on my set and I'm guessinig copy guard must be the reason. In pro video we use analog component all the time for capturing, transfering, outputing, etc. HD signals. We in the world did they decide that's what they would turn off on consumer players? This leaves me with a very expensive and SLOW DVD player that will only deliver 480p to my georgious HD 65inch Mitsubishi. Obviously I'm heartbroken, but I can't rush out and replace my four-year old set quite yet. And it's not my set's fault, it can produce beautiful HD from its component inputs. It's Sony's fault for deciding analog component was the place to turn off the HD. Is there any device that converts HDMI to analog component and is HDCP compatible? Would appreciate any advice. |

I believe this refers to only dvd's not blurays...or it would also say "BD's" like it does everywhere else in the manual. this feature sounds like its refering to upscaled dvd's at 720 or 1080. You cannot upscale with component and is why it will revert back to 480. Last edited by crackinhedz; 11-17-2007 at 06:14 PM. |

ok took me some time
i have a 73'' mitsu and a bdp-s500 (fortunately i do have hdmi on my tv) but i have the sony str-dg1000 amp, so not sure on your pioneer amp so here we go does your pioneer amp have HDMI if so connect your 500 to your amp (via HDMI) then try using your amp outputs (rgb component) to the TV, i was able to get 1080i i also just switched the player from hdmi to component (from s500 to amp to tv was able to get 1080i) i didnt find any settings in the s500 i needed to change. Older mitsubishis have been pretty good about being HDCP compliant...at least from the few people Ive conversed with that had them...

According to an article I read, the FCC didn't approve the use of HDCP in the US until August 4, 2004. That's why I am skeptical that his 4 year old TV would be HDCP compliant.

Sony STR-DG1000 User Manual (pg.26):
"Video signals input to the HDMI IN jack can only be output from the HDMI OUT jack. The video input signals cannot be output from the VIDEO OUT jacks, S VIDEO OUT jacks, or MONITOR OUT jacks." (pg.34): "HDMI video signals cannot be converted to component video signals, S video signals, and video signals." ... ![]() Last edited by crackinhedz; 11-17-2007 at 06:10 PM. |

also, my father has an older Mitsubishi, and component only.
Having looked at his before, I know that there are two sets of Component inputs, but only one is for HD (480p/1080i). maybe yours is similar? Last edited by crackinhedz; 11-17-2007 at 08:18 PM. |

this has got to be the biggest con the industry has ever pulled off. digital video was initially designed to transmit down coaxial cables (which you could run at big lengths)
then these industry idiots developed hdmi, and said 'hey, why don't we rip everyone off and make 1080p hdmi compliant only'. the basic fact is component video is more than capable of transmitting 1080p. I recently went to a shop where they were displaying Hi Def via component and hdmi, and believe it or not the component actually looked better. hdmi is good, don't get me wrong, but i think it's very unfair, and a big shame that the industry has decided to force people to use hdmi by ruthlessly cutting off component, when in reality component is good, enables connectivity with old equipment, and lets you stream things in multi room etc...none of which hdmi does. |

I also have a HDTV without HDMI connection. But you need to tell your player that 1080i is your highest resolution by going through Display Settings on the Blu-ray Player, as I did the same with my PS3. Component don't upscale regular DVDs to 1080 because of HDCP compliance. I have a burned Sin City DVD and it looked fantastic but original DVDs still looks just 480p quality.
I really hope that the studios lift up that compliancy crap and let those earlier HDTV adopters enjoy their HDTV. I mean, right after I buy my set they introduced HDMI. |
