Default Why is Profile 1.1/2.0 taken so long to implement ?

If your sense of competing is that we have to give away Blu-ray players and movies at prices equal to, or less than another company who is taking a scorched earth tact, that's just not going to happen. Yes, Blu-ray is in this to win, but there has to be some kind of business left, when the battle is won.
First off let me say I want Blu-ray to win. I believe in the superior specs of Blu-ray. I want the highest quality video and audio and believe Blu-ray is better at this than HD-DVD. I have been following this format war for the last year and half, but have yet to take the plunge. One of the main reasons being the profile issue.

Why has it taken the BDA group 17 months after initially releasing players to release the first profile 1.1 player (Panasonic BD-30)? Why is there also 2.0, why not make everything standard(Bonusview/BD-Live) in the first go around.

If Blu-ray is in it to win, why would they ask their customer base to replace their players to play Bonusview 1.1 content on new discs(Sunshine, REvil:Extinction, War etc.) released in 2008 and beyond because existing players (PS3 excluded) cannot play them. Then do it again for 2.0 BD-Live titles like Disney's National Treasure and Sleeping Beauty.

This is the only thing that has bugged me about Blu-ray. I feel like the BDA is taking their customers on a ride. Want this feature, buy a new player.

I feel for J6P if they bought their players now and next year can't play 1.1 or 2.0 content. Just because they didn't know about all these profile issues. The average consumer shouldn't have to know about this nor do they care.

Can anybody (especially insiders) please provide some insight into this.

I'm pretty sure several of the older Blu-ray players will be able to be updated via firmware off the internet to 1.1spec. spec 2.0 however will require a whole new player.

This has always been the case with early adopters of technology. You know that later with further advancement there will be new features and technology introduced.

Nav, you can do a search but it's been answered before.

Long story short

Profiles- At manufacture it costs approximately $20-30 less to make a 1.1 player than a 2.0. This translates to $50 at retail which enables them to get it cheaper, sooner. So far as the "why 17 months", the lead time on HD titles is extremely long, and the software to make 1.1 titles wasn't finished and certified until early summer (there's a lot more to it than just overlaying a 480p window like HD DVD does, read up on the Sunshine spec for more details)

The vast majority of Blu players out there right now are PS3s, and the settop decks are mostly owned by early adopter types who tend to upgrade every few years. There are 2.0 players coming out before the end of the year (PS3 is also 2.0 compliant), and not everyone is enamored wit hthe online features (and as HD DVD has proven, rushing them can lead to major problems, virtually every online title for HD has had corrupted cookie issues that stops the movie loading)

By the time J6P even notices dedicated BR decks, the vast majority will be 2.0anyway, and all content except for the online stuff is accessible in some way on all players. While you might not be able to play it in a video window, you CAN play it as a seperate feature for PiP.

I highly doubt it, as it's a hardware issue. 1.1 requires secondary video/audio decoder for PIP capabilities and 256MB of local storage.

Mods,
rather than going the route of people yelling at Navman77, can you move this to another thread and let us explain it to him?
No sense clogging up the insider's thread

lets help him out without the name calling, I have sent him a PM explaining how the Cell processor can handle the PIP and now I think we should help him with the memory requirements

paidgeek or another insider who would know. I'm a little confused about the Black Friday deal for the Sony BDP-S300 at Best Buy. It is currently $399 at a BB I went to today (and $379 at Costco), but at least one Black Friday site is reporting that it will be $499 with a $100 gift card and SM:3 on BD. Just want to make sure that is right (since if the gift card was after the current price people would probably want to get the word out about that). Is it going to be $499 before the discounts for Black Friday there?

And on that same note, are there going to be any big discounts for standalone Blu-ray players for just this Friday or this weekend that we should know about? So far it seems like standalone players are already pretty close to the prices in the Black Friday ads I've seen (if they have been interpreted right) and in some cases, even lower.

Thanks,
Darin

Looks right to me, CC has (supost too) the sony300 with instant $100 off, no gift card that BB has.

The answer to the question is YES!

I bought my BDP-S1 fully understanding that it may be obsolete (or at least not cutting edge) within a year.

The only reason I choke back the urge to buy the new Panasonic player right now is that I think there will be little bit wider choice after the Christmas season this year.

Consider how many people trade in automobiles every two years.

I have the PS3 so I have a profile 1.1 and 2.0 player already. I just need the software upgrades.

But i will be purchasing a stand alone player in the future.

don't need new player. my players are both PS3s (one region A-japan, one region B-UK). they are, I believe, capable of profile 2.0

Can someone find the thread where it is discussed that the 256 mb of local storage would be handled by the hardrive in the ps3?

Darn, you beat me to it--
The PS3 was the last on my list, because I was holding out for built-in 1.1, and didn't want to get my feet wet in the gaming community...
But it was the fact that other standalones didn't play well with firmware updates that mainly influenced my decision. Nowadays, I don't even look at standalone players, and guard my PS3 carefully.

I wasn't talking about the PS3. In my original post I said PS3 excluded. Of course I know all this.

My post was really to talk about the impact of the profiles on the format war and J6P.

If Blu-ray is going to take it, then J6P needs to buy a Blu-ray player and not a PS3.

That's what has me peeved with the BDA.

No I don't want a PS3. I want a standalone that can do it all and I have to wait till the end of the year or next year to buy one. Almost 2 years into the format.
