Default What effect will firesales of HD-DVD have?

Sure we've seen the Onkyo article, but what is the long-term effect? Obviously Toshiba wants saturation and market share, but what is the downside to undercutting every other CE company on the planet just to stay tight with MS and keep DVD royalties up until DL content is a reality? (Ugh...the thought of not owning hardcopy makes me ill).

Thoughts?

Not sure if there are any long term effects other then the ball is now in the BDA's court. Tosh played their last card with the price drop. If the BDA waits about 3 mos and then does a similar price drop with a studio(WB or Uni) switch. It's game over I think it'll be easy for studios to see that BD is the winner if the $99 players don't generate any further sales increases for the HD-DVD camp. On the other hand, If BD holds strong without any serious price drop, I think thats a good sign to the studios that money can be made with the BDA and they deliever a superior product.

That is why Microcrap keeps helping Toshiba. Microcrap wants both formats to lose and have consumers do video downloads.

I hate the thought of it myself

No effect. It is shown through numbers that most HD-Dud owners do not purchase a substantial amount of movies. Probably, because of the price of $34.95. So whats the effect of selling a lot of players, but no movies? Absolutely nothing but screwing more people that chose that player, because it was $99. But, as the HD-dud guys always say. "If HD-DVD loses, consumers will still have a upconverted Dvd player."

I really think the impact will be minimal, I think PS3 sales going through the roof along with all of the CE standalones accelerating will make the firesale nothing more than a blip or two.

Toshiba made a big mistake taking Worth out of there product by reducing it to 99.99 k-mart..The red light special of sorts focusing on the wrong consumer base. There actions haven't shown higher software sales as I expected and has scared away manufacturer's like Onkyo from investing in there format because no money is to be made.
Toshiba has dug there self a very deep hole they wont get out of.
