The PS3 will decode Dolby TrueHD internally and send it to the Denon via Linear PCM.

The PS3 does not yet decode DTS-HD MA. Word is that it will by christmas...hopefully.

The PS3 cannot output high resolution audio via bitstream, so for those formats you will need to leave the PS3 set on Linear PCM. (your Denon should display "Multichannel" or something to that extent)

but you can toggle back and forth between Bitstream and Linear PCM when needed. During a movie...hit the triangle button and go to AV Settings

Dolby TrueHD: YES

DTS-HD: NO

Rumor is the DTS-HD will be added by Christmas, so in the mean time when you watch a movie that has a DTS-HD Master audio track, it is ok to keep the PS3 on Bitstream or Linear PCM.

so if i leave my ps3 to pcm all the time my denon receiver will play all the audio that it supports? if that is the case would it be better to just leave it on pcm all the time so my receiver can upgrade all the sound

The link below is a chart with all the formats.

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/IS...und_chart.html

If you want to see these....

light up in your Denon's front disply you will need a stand alone player that can bitstream the new audio formats. I too am in the camp that prefers the receiver/Pre/Pro to do the heavy lifting, i also found that the bitstream sounded better (owned the PS3) than internal decoding of the new formats. DTS-HD Master is something special!

i keep reading from people that bitstreaming is better than pcm. this is really confusing because i emailed Dolby L abs and they said that there is no difference in quality whether the signal is sent bitstream or pcm.

with bitstream will i ever be able to have my playstation 3 play dts hd and true hd through my receiver? or will i have to get a stand alone or keep changing to pcm?

i leave mine on pcm and it comes through automatically. and i keep hearing that there is hdmi limitation to the ps3 hardware that bitstreaming is not possible for the hd codecs. then people blast that view so theres no real proof.

for the hd sound you need the hdmi. otherwise youll only get dd and dts 5.1. the hdmi can also handle 7.1

In theory there should be no difference. But that is not how things have worked out in the real world. Now there are many theorys as to why this might happen. The one that I think best fits is the fact that the receiver is made to decode audio so it just does a better job of it. The decoding hardware is better in them.

The real thing that is important is to figure what sounds best to you. In my experence it seem like those that can bitstream the audio think it is better. Where those that have a unit like the PS3 that cannot think the PCM track sound better. Of course there could be many reasons this as well such as one track has a lower bitrate than the other.

use hdmi from ps3 to reciever. set your reivers hdmi input to whatever you want to use on the reciever like game/tv for example and then set the sound to multi channel. set ps3 sound to hdmi and then choose your resolutions settings then auto for the rest. this works for me. also make sure your ps3 is set to pcm. you will not get dts ma. not available yet (fingers crossed)

Dolby TrueHD = Linear PCM

DTS-HD Master = Linear PCM or Bitstream (will play core DTS extension only)
