In theory there should be no difference. But that is not how things have worked out in the real world. Now there are many theorys as to why this might happen. The one that I think best fits is the fact that the receiver is made to decode audio so it just does a better job of it. The decoding hardware is better in them.

The real thing that is important is to figure what sounds best to you. In my experence it seem like those that can bitstream the audio think it is better. Where those that have a unit like the PS3 that cannot think the PCM track sound better. Of course there could be many reasons this as well such as one track has a lower bitrate than the other.
