Sony STR-DG920 Receiver Handles 110 Watts Per Channel, 1080p and 24Hz
![]() Sony's latest STR-DG920 receiver looks nice (it's got a similar look to my cheap-o Sony receiver in a box and other Sony receivers), but has plenty of functionality as well. There's the 7.1 channel support, 1080p + 60/24Hz, four HDMI ports (woo!), Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, dts High Resolution Audio, dts HD Master Audio, xvyCC, Deep Color Sony's Digital Media Port (networking and connectivity with iPods and other stuff), is XM Connect-and-Play ready (5.1) and has 20-30 second auto-setup. It'll be available in June for $600. |

The DTS-MA and Dolby True HD decoding are great to have. The issue is if the PS3 does do the decode is there any other features that will be more useful. There is a lot of nice units on clearance right now which lack DTS-MA and Dolby True HD. I would recommended looking at your setup and determing what needs you have. How many HDMI inputs do you need? Do you need Component/composite/svideo input to HDMI output? Would Audyssey MultEQxt Room EQ autosetup be something you are interested in? The 605 is a nice receiver but does not do some desired things (1080p component to HDMI). The 705 could fall in your price range. Also how much time do you want to spend looking. The Onkyo 605 will meet your needs, and so will the Sony DG-910 (both can be gotten in the 350 range with minimal looking).
For me DTS-MA and Dolby True HD did not matter as much as getting the best receiver in my budget that could do 7.1 over HDMI. I ended up with a Denon AVR-987 (2807) since it best matched my needs, and some Kef 2005.2 speakers. I am very happy with the sound quality, and functionality of the AV receiver. Only other recommendation is if other people plan to use your setup get a Harmony remote. RabidBunny Last edited by RabidBunny; 04-17-2008 at 04:53 PM. |

It's not a huge issue for me (plan on using my PS3/4 or whatever as long as I can), but I was just curious... |

I had the DG910 which worked great with the PS3, but I recently upgraded to the STR-DA3300ES which is comparable to the onkyo 705 just about same price too...
The STR-DA3300ES is a much better receiver than the DG910 obviously, but I mainly baught it for its ability to manually configure the speakers I got with more options and the new GUI which is awesome. Also the bass for the 3300 is alot better than the DG910 was.. It doesn't have the codecs but that is what the PS3 is for ![]() |

I have a:
Sony Receiver HT-6800DP (bought in 2004 w/o HDMI slots) Sony 6.1 Home theater (also bought in 2004) Sony Bravia LCD KDL40S3000 (only 2 HDMI slots; PS3 & Cable box) PS3 250 Gig My PS3 has always been connected via HDMI to TV & RCA cables to Reveiver, but I recently bought an optical cable. Oddly, I am getting more powerful sound from the RCA cable than the optical cable. I tried connecting the PS3 directly to the receiver and also from the TV directly to the receiver. I cannot figure this out. Can someone please help here. I will likely upgrade to the Samsung 46'' or 55'' LED, though I cannot see a reason why I would need to upgrade my receiver. The sound is good with RCA but I expect the sound to be better (richer and more powerful) with Optical... am I wrong? Thanks, Dale |

So I should run an optical cord from the PS3 to the TV & the TV to the receiver. Does that mean the the Optical cord will give me better sound than the HDMI cable that the PS3/ TV is connected to?
Also, when using the Optical cable, I get a PCM 48 kHz sign... but when I use the RCA I don't see that on the receiver. There is a small note in the manual that states: When signals with a sampling frequency of more than 48 kHz is input, the tone and sound field cannot be used. Does this have something to do with this? Thanks again for the help. Dale |

As to whether you get better quality sound form PCM stereo over optical or analog PS3 output is a matter of which digital-to-analog converter works bets, the one in the PS3 or the one in the receiver. I see no advantage to running an optical cable to your TV if it can read audio from HDMI. |

Since my PS3 is brand new and the receiver is over 5 years old, I suspect the PS3 digital to analog converter is better than the receiver. However, when i use the Optical cord, I get the PCM info on the display. Not sure what information I can glean from that besides the RCA output is not limited by the: "When signals with a sampling frequency of more than 48 kHz is input, the tone and sound field cannot be used" issue; hence, I get a louder sound from the RCA cables than the optical? |
