What's your price range. It's tough to recommend anything w/o knowing that.

well depends on you room size and you budget. but for me the sony strdg 1100 worked for me since i'm like you i use the ps3 as my player and probably wont' get a stand alone until they are dirt cheap. it does 1080p/24fps and 8ch lpcm which is perfect for my system.got mine for under $500 new from amazon it is a bit pricey. you may also want to wait for the new strdg 920 does everything dtshd ma and truehd in case you get a stand alone that bitstreams someday. but it doesn't hit the streets til summer. but onkyo, yamaha are all great recievers as well.

Right but i dont need DTS HD and TrueHD due to the fact the PS3 does it for it and then puts it out via lPCM to your receiver so you would only need a 7.1 channel reciever that takes in audio and video. Now i will need a 1080p/24p right becuz my tv and PS3 are that right? is everything right i just said lol.

Be careful about what receiver you buy.

There is a LOT more in terms of variables between low cost receivers and more expensive models. The inclusion of DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD decoders is a very tiny factor in what makes a good quality receiver more expensive.

Even with the PS3 getting internal DTS-HD decoding, I still intend to buy one of a few receivers I have picked out to purchase soon. All have built in Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding. But they also all have better quality amplifiers, more inputs on the back for more video sources and lots of other stuff.

In the end, I'm still looking at spending around $1500 for a new receiver.

All you need is a receiver that accepts LPCM over HDMI..

Sony STR-DG910 ( I own)
Denon 2308CI
Yamaha RX-V1700
Marantz SR4002

All around the 500 dollar price range.. The DG910 is actually in the 300 range..

I was thinking of upgrading to a "nicer" receiver like the V1700 but the DG910 has worked just fine and it passes 1080/24p just fine for movies..

Yamaha makes amazing high quality receivers, and they're just beginning to transition to their new model line with DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD codecs. Since you're comfortable buying a receiver without them built in, you can get yourself one hell of an outstanding receiver by buying one of the outgoing models without the HD surround programs.

For example, the Yamaha RX-V861 is a 7.1 channel receiver with a normal retail price of $999.95 It offers 105 watts per channel x 7 measured with all channels driven from 20Hz to 20kHz at .06%THD. It uses 192kHz / 24 bit Burr Brown DACs on all channels, and also upscales all video sources to 1080i while passing native 1080p signals as well. By contrast, the new RX-V863 was just introduced as replacement for the 861with DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD at $999.95.

Now, you can find the 1 year old RX-V881 online for $479 at OneCall. It's a screamin' deal. Here's a review from Home Theater Magazine:

i say get the onkyo 705 because it is one of the best receivers for the price this has nothing to do with the advanced codecs, i know the receiver has dts-hd and true-hd but it would be pointless to find a receiver that didn't have it just to not have it, also if you ever got a standalone you might want it. i understand that your asking if you can get a better receiver for the money if it doesn't have the new codecs, the answer is yes IF you get a preamp-amp setup but for around $500 the onkyo is one of the best whether it has the codecs or not

Check out the receiver section and look for the appropriate receiver thread. There you can ask users if they have sucessfully pass 1080/24p

I know the v1700 does and I will assume the v861 does too as the poster above suggested. Also another great receiver..

While the PS3 can/will be able to decode the DTS-HD MA and TrueHD and send it via PCM to a receiver via HDMI, I would recommend thinking ahead a bit and realizing that if you ever decide to get a standalone BD player, this option will go away.

Additionally, the more expensive receivers have additional benefits as well.

Think ahead before making the final decision.

While you may not need it now, buying something that doesn't support TrueHD/DTS HDMA is kind of like buying into HD DVD tomorrow, especially since you're not saving much by NOT getting the capability.

Why would that go away? DVD players have had the ability to internally decode audio codecs for years. Why would CEs up and decide now to just let the reciever do it? Especially concidering that for the forseeable future, all blu-ray players are gonna come standard w/ HDMI 1.3.
