there are two types of surge protectors( not to be confused with UPS's or power conditioners)

One type burns itself up in a surge and then most be replaced. The other type severs the connection. The first type is your cheaper style that once they absorb the surge are dead and you have to buy a new one. THe second type is the more expensive style like a furman etc. that your fine after most surges.

hmmmm... that sounds expensive... I don't think my parents would go for paying for an f'in expensive electrician to come out. pardon my french. I think, for now, I'm just going to invest in a really nice surge protector. That should at least protector my units if a fuse blows. It only happens when the large industrial fan and the blow dryer are running at the same time.

I just don't want to lose my receiver for another month and a half again. I can't enjoy my blu's and it makes me sad... I wanna make sure this never happens again!

I'm telling you, a good power conditioner totally eliminates the problem of popping breakers and fuses. If that's your main problem, conditioners are the solution. You only need a UPS if your problem is interrupted downloads and file management... which, by the way, would be mitigated by improved power conditioning protecting you from small blackouts, which a good power conditioner will do. You have a limited budget. Don't let guys with a massive budget push you into something you can't afford.

you should still consider a ups. not just a surge protector. ps3 manual states its not good to turn off the switch in back if not on standby and ive read many cases that where this has been done and thier ps3 hasnt been the same or needed to be sent in. ups will allow you to keep it on until you can properly shut down. like a pc.

and for the record, i dont have a massive budget

MOnster does make good power conditioners, but when I compared theirs to the Furman offerings, I went with the latter. The money spent on a Furman is spent on the bits that actually do the work, rather than "bling". IOW, the Monsters look more flashy, but for the same price the Furman does a better job. I currently have the Furman Elite-15PFi, but will eventually get something like the PS Audio Premier.

Monster's questionable business practices (e.g., suing Blue Jeans Cable) is what tipped me over the edge.

That irked me, but did you see how the Blue Jeans CEO handled it? He made them look like fools. It was classic.

Yeah, I read the CEO's response a couple of weeks ago. Most amusing!

Has there been any recent updates?

Prices are pretty good if you shop around.
I decided to sell my HTS 1600 to my buddy for 100bux and my new HTS3600 is coming today.

APC H15 and J15 are very very pretty, along with the Belkin AVU1500.

Check out www.richardgrayspowercompany.com They make the best by far.
I have the 600s and there is a noticable improvement in sound and video quality. Would not have believed it without seeing it with my own two eyes. A power conditioner is not a surge protector or battery back up. SOme people get them confused.

Try to get a pure sine wave unit if it is UPS. A pure sine wave UPS is friendlier to appliances than a simulated sine wave UPS.

Only if you want to pay way more than it's worth though... and support one of the evilest companies out there. http://www.madmartian.com/legal/ for instance, and they actually sued Disney for naming a movie "Monsters, Inc."

everyone sues everyone... and paying more than its worth is subjective... would you say its "worth" the extra 10-20% for a company with a good reputation and great product warranty?

Only buy Furman power conditioners.

Leave the Monster gear to the folks at BestBuy.
