Default Power Conditioner

Hello There,

So I got my amplifier and am extremely satisfied with it. However, somewhere between the receiver and the amplifier noise is being created and is coming through the speakers. I would like to try to eliminate that using a power conditioner. I am looking to spend around $200 but will spend a little more if I have to, to get a good quality product. I will be hooking up receiver, tv, amp, ps3, directtv, and subwoofer. Thanks for your help and please feel free to offer other suggestions.

For once I'm going to come to the defense of MONSTER. They actually make some pretty decent gear in that department, just shop around.

There was a great deal around for an APC unit over at audioholics, but I'm not sure if that is still on.

You should check you're owners manual for the amp about plugging the amp into conditioner ! Some Manufacturers recommend not too !! I know Emotiva says not to because all that protection is built in !!!

I just got one of these, it is really nice. This is about 100 dollars less than what they usually go for...

The manual doesn't say anything about plugging it into a power conditioner. I think it would be okay.

I borrowed an Emotiva amp some time ago, and had the same problem. Plugging it into my Panamax line conditioner didn't help. I changed all sorts of wiring to no avail. Thing sounded like a snake. The same amp doesn't do a thing to my friends system. Go figure.

So I ordered that APC and man do I really feel like I am getting a great deal. I read through the manual and this thing is loaded with features. I am anxiously looking forward to this one for the protection, and also, I think in my setup it might help with performance. I'll report my findings.

Help with performance? Don't expect too much from a line conditioner (unless you're on the North Korean power grid).

I had a similar issue at one time. First check to see if your IC's are near any power cables and if not maybe it could be a ground loop issue. May be that you are getting interference from your TV cable.

If a power conditioner doesn't help solve your issue. I bet you are picking up noise through your interconnects. This is what I did: get IC's from Blue Jeans Cable made from "LC-1 Low Capacitance Audio Cable". Worked for me, however I was picking up noise from my DLP TV itself.

Stereo cables
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/audio/index.htm

Surround cables
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/6channel/index.htm

You very well may have the other issues, but if all else fails try the heavy shielded cables from Blue Jean's. They are nice cables.

I simply do not care if I get blasted for what I'm about to say but I do not care. I am not trying to pick a fight or diss anyone here, but ........... when you get into adding amps, pre-amps and such. "Do not rely on MONOPRICE or any other poor quality cables (analog) for your IC's" !!!

Hope this helps you in the end .

Thanks for your input. I have also been wondering if maybe the cables aren't shielded enough going from the receiver to the. I got them from monoprice. In all honesty, they look like good cables. Here is how I am pretty sure it is a power noise problem. When I remove the RCAs from the receiver's line out, the noise goes away. It also goes away when I remove the line inputs from the amp. Meaning that the amp isn't causing the noise, and that it is indeed coming from the receiver. Whether it helps or not, I am not too worried because this is just a smart investment and I got a great deal on a pretty heavy duty power coniditoner.

When it comes to conditioners and electrical supply I defer to the musicians world. Furhman makes the best conditioners out there and are specifically designed (depending on model) to isolate and eliminate noise as well as consistent current. You can pick one up a pretty good model at guitar center for about 100 dollars and will last a lifetime.

Electronics love running on a perfect 120 volts this in itself will quiet down any hum you may have.

Yup, which is why I splurged on a Panamax with Voltage Regulation. Smooth as ice!

Since this is a pre-pro/ Amp thread , Monster conditioners are nice bust most are current limiting, which means plugging an amplifier in with alot of output will degrade the sound ,,, In some cases quite noticeably...Unfortuanally plugging the amp into the wall is the best bet sonically.... Unless you get a non current limiting conditioner .. MY ,02

Absolutely. My Panamax has a high current plug for Amplifiers, and it is important that your power conditioner has support for such an option when using an amp. Otherwise, you're going to strangle your amp and miss out on all that performance you just paid for.

So does the APC H15 do this?

Is there a short list of power conditioners that are recommended for a pre/pro set up?

The only negative I found so far with the high current outlets (on my Panamax) is I have two subs, both are plugged into the only two high current outlets available. That doesn't leave a high current outlet for my receiver or amp. Btw... I plugged the subs in the high current outlet based on Panamax's suggestion.

a good example of limiting voltage is a variac or a power soak. Guitar players use them with various I high output amps to be able to play them at room levels. But the problem is it also sucks tone even know it will help you distort earlier and at lower volumes.

This APC has everything I will ever need. Honestly, this is the best bang for buck I have ever seen. They are getting rid of the silver one for 149.99 while the black one is still 419.99. You would be crazy not to look at it. Yes, it has high current filter.
