Can't say I'm surprised.

We'll see what happens with OLED.

It's sad they haven't decided to launch some high-end sets. It seems mass market is all they want to target.

I read that Pioneer is going to be releasing an entirely new plasma technology this summer that is comparable to SED technology.

Thought I read in the past couple of days that Sony had announced a sale date (vs. "sometime this year") for their 11" OLED.

Better get ready for that surgery for those bodily organs you're going to have to sell off to pay for this project.

It's not entirely new, but it is entirely advanced. I'll definitely be getting one of the new 50" Pioneer Elites in September.

Sony should pay for the patent and develop SED further, like they did with LCoS/D-ILA.

Actually this is good news.

With SED being further away from the picture, OLED TV technology can take off faster and gain more acceptance than even before.

This will make OLED TV the next technological successor to ALL current forms of display technology (well....aside from Laser TV of course)

Take that SED

There's no room for SED in the next generation of display technologies. Reason for that? Simply because OLED (and Laser TV) fit the bill perfectly.

Tech wise, SED can't even match up to OLED.

SED (1st gen specs....supposedly):
-100,000:1 contrast ratio
-1 milisecond response time
-No 24 fps support

OLED (based on Sony 27 inch 1080p prototype model)
-1,000,000:1 contrast ratio
-1 MICROSECOND response time or faster
-24 fps support
-500 cd/m2 brightness

And this is just a prototype model. What more when the first gen units come out!!!

With SED being inferior tech-wise, the consortium shouldn't even bother with it anymore. Plus, with the legal hurdles and production delays, it makes the situation even worse than what it is.

So yup, it looks like OLED TV is the one that deserves to be the display technology for the next generation.

Why would we say that it is the best?

The dedicated OLED thread at AVSF explains why OLED will come out on top over SED. Thus proving that SED has no room in the arena of future display tech for the next gen.

In short, OLED TV is indeed the future of next-gen display technology.

OLED is currently used in many Sony Walkmen, Sony Ericsson phones, digital cameras, and many other products. Some of the current problems with OLED is the limited screen size of 27 inches and max lifetime under ideal conditions is only 20,000 hours. If and when large screens of 50 inches or higher with life spans of at least 50,000 hours becomes a reality then OLED will be an awesome technology that is better then any other current technology. 5mm thickness is so light and thin. This technology should be popular one day. The contrast ratio and response time is awesome. OLED has a better contrast ratio then CRT.
Hopefully Sony in 3 years will surprise everyone with awesome OLED technology in big screen sizes when the technology is ready.

I really hoped that Sony was going to have OLED TVs ready for 2008, but it looks like I'm going to have to get myself a new 50"+ LCD that does 24p.

Sony’s electronic paper might use similar organic components that is used in OLED. In the future one day one might be able to place a 100 inch screen on the wall similar to wall paper.
