While I wasn't in the board room when the deals were made I just can't see Bob Iger agreeing to spend $4.8 billion for something that Disney doesn't control and own 100% outright.

Whether or not a single film can be screened in theaters or released on video is a drop in the bucket compared to the money that can be made on future movies and merchandise.

Wrong. Lucas acquired the movie Rights back years ago

Default Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Original & Prequel Trilogy - Sept 16, 2011 - Re...

There are credible reports everywhere that support the idea that Fox owns the rights to the original Star Wars film itself. I'd love to see a report that credibly suggests otherwise. What's likely is that people in this thread are confusing things like sequel rights and merchandising rights, which Lucas did successfully negotiate away from Fox years ago.

You can't just cite yourself and expect people to believe it. I can quote my own posts too. It means nothing.

Back up what you're saying with a credible source.

I'm not hunting them down anymore.

I do notice a lot of older links in google from 2012-2013 refer to Fox owning ANH outright in their headlines which has led to lots of confusion.

This more recent link from 2014 states that :"Disney owns the rights to the movies. Fox owns the distribution rights to the movies, but can’t distribute them because they don’t own the movies themselves (minus ‘A New Hope,’ which they fully financed). Disney owns the movies, but can’t release them because they don’t own distribution rights."

I clicked on every post you quoted and none of them have any citation that isn't in the quote itself.

You got nothing aside from your boasting about reading things 15+ years ago.

Maybe you're the problem. Maybe you're the one who gets in and confuses things with misunderstood info every few weeks. It sure seems that way.

I'm not the only one saying this though.

Look, theres a really quick way for you to prove it to yourselv, Grab your DVD and your Blu-Ray and compare the copyrights printed on the Disks!

You'll see it says c1997-2011 LucasFilm

That means LucasFilm owns it since 1997. The year they bought it back from Fox. In exchange for the rights to distribute the Prequels!

In fact, here is the photo I just took of the Blu-Ray:

Sorry, forgot to flip it...

Default Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Original & Prequel Trilogy - Sept 16, 2011 - Re...

Oh man this is getting good.

That merely states LucasFilm owns the trademark. And they do.. You can't slap the name or logo of Star Wars on a product without giving credit to LucasFilm. It has precisely zero to do with home video or theatrical distribution.

A similar situation is how the Paramount DVDs of the Friday the 13th movies cite New Line Cinema as the trademark owner.

So Fox is in a bit of a pickle if they ever want to release Star Wars on video without crediting LucasFilm for using its trademarks (again: title/logo/characters) but if they want to release it in a brown paper bag with 1977 Space Opera listed as the title to spite Lucas and Disney they'd be well within their rights. This was one of the sticking points with Fox and Warner in regards to the Batman series too. And of course you'll see Marvel credited as trademark holder on all sorts of stray pre-Disney productions from Sony, Fox, Universal etc. Go ahead and post pictures of those discs. I dare you.

And it actually says 1977, not 1997. Might wanna get your prescription checked.

http://articles.latimes.com/1998/apr...iness/fi-35475

"Though executives from Fox and Lucas' San Rafael, Calif.-based Lucasfilm Ltd. declined to elaborate on most specifics of the deal, one source hinted that in exchange for a much-lower-than-usual (likely less than 10%) distribution fee on the films plus the rights to debut "Episode I" on its Fox TV network, Fox gave Lucas the rights to the original "Star Wars," making his empire complete."

That article was printed in the business section of the LA Times 17 years ago. You know -- right around the same time Star Wars stopped carrying a "20th Century Fox" copyright in the credits, and it has carried a "Copyright LucasFilm Ltd." copyright notice in the end credits ever since.

People can't understand that an unverified report that has never once been confirmed in 17 years is essentially debunked by default. If that's the best you guys have to come up with them you might as well give up..

It's flimsy to the extreme and you have reports from entities that are every bit as credible staying Fox owns the film outright with confidence within the past two heads which should supersede a questionable rumor from 17 years ago in the eyes of any rational person.

I saw your hilarious armchair copyright debate with your screenshots earlier. A couple of you guys definitely had yourselves convinced. You had a nice little consensus going. Too bad it wasn't correct.

What's even more funny is if Disney wants to release them they will. It's that's simple. Why? Because Fox which has distribution rights wants to make money as well. It's a pretty simple and easy process. The only ones that want to keep making this a looping discussion are the OT haters out there that can't seem to get over the fact or come to grips with the idea that not everyone loves these new versions of the films or the PT. For some reason they just cant seem to understand that. And to put the icing on the cake they have the versions that they love in HD already, so why are they even taking the "Debbie Downer" attitude toward a potential release? For only one reason....to keep stirring the pot.

You got your versions right? We didn't...If I had the versions that I grew up with and wanted I would not even be in this thread any longer or at least not engaging in the Unaltered Original Trilogy discussion.
