I don't want to have to go back thru dozens of pages so if someone could give me a one word answer I'd really appreciate it. Has it been decided if Disney is releasing the UOT at some point? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers. Also, I apologize that I missed out on the original discussion concerning this.

No. Nothing had been announced. Just a lot of speculation.

There are rumors they want to or are preparing to but nothing official at all. Fox has a distribution contract through at least 2020, but there's no reason they wouldn't want to distribute anything Star Wars if Disney wants to do it.

Thank you Kryptonic and StingingVelvet. Maybe we'll get something with the release of the new film in December. Like many people on here, the UOT is a must, but I wouldn't mind having the 1997 Special Editions either.

Ideally any new release would have both versions using seamless branching. Though it would probably have the digital cleanup and polish of the SEs on both versions, just not the extra scenes and CGI. If the theatrical versions were raw, unmodified original negative scans then there probably wouldn't be room for both on one disc? Just guessing.

They could probably do only the theatrical cuts and count on you buying the existing release if you want both. They do like money, after all.

Yeah, i think there are too many little changes to get away with seamless branching. Nearly every scene has something that's slightly different. You could probably do that for all of the special edition versions though, which would be awesome.

That is my thoughts as well. Have one disc with the theatrical versions and then another with the SE/DVD/Blu-Ray versions. Doubt it will ever happen, but it would be nice.

On my Plasma ST60, the picture quality is better in The Phantom Menace than the other two movies following it. It was more sharp and had more detail while the other two movies were soft and almost blurry. Anyone else agree?

Plus, I thought Revenge of the Sith was the best of the whole Saga. I could not tolerate the bad acting, bad story, and bad direction in the originals or Phantom Menace.

We do know that Radiance (who bought Lowry) posted on their Web site that 4K, 16 bit work was done for the original trilogy as of 2012 (before they pulled the info from their site). We don't know if these are the SE incarnations or the unaltered trilogy, or if/when they will be released.

Why? That is a waste of money when you can then sell it to a second hand shop and get yourself about $6 back.

I watched The Phantom Menance when I used to have a 65" VT60 and watched it not too long ago on my JVC front projector. Some scenes look pretty good, but too many scenes just look so damned filtered with DNR. It does not look film-like and while they proabably tried to give it the same look as the other two prequels, they did a poor job. Attack of the Clones does look soft but its just inherent and doesn't have that DNR look as it was one if not the first digitally filmed 1080p movies if I recall. The digital camera technology greatly improved for Sith which looks quite good all the way around.

It was a joke in reference to a line in A New Hope.

There's too many alterations in terms of visuals and audio to present the movies through seamless branching.

If all 4 cuts were to be included you'd be looking at 4 discs per movie, one for each cut.

You'd be looking at roughly a 15 disc box set.

4 Discs for A New Hope.

4 Discs for The Empire Strikes Back

4 Discs for Return Of The Jedi

Also a disc of special features for each movie.

Then again with the amount stuff floating around you'd might have to possibly have 2 special features discs per movie.

Or you could cram all the special features from all 3 movies onto 3 or 4 discs to save space and manufacturing costs.

Either way such a box set would have a lot of discs.

If you were to also include the prequels and the different versions of The Phantom Menace And Attack Of The Clones plus all the special features for those 3 movies, you'd be looking at a Bond 50 style box set in terms of content and the number of discs included.

The different color timings alone wouldn't allow for seamless branching.

Which is why I posted this months ago and reposted the other day.
This is the only way that the movies can have all of the cuts:

It's easy: untouched originals with a nice fat encode and the myriad original audio options on one disc, then the '97/'04/'11 versions branched on another. For the prequels we can have a branched theatrical cut/DVD cut/BD cut disc and a separate 3D platter. Extras disc for each movie. Lather, rinse, repeat.
