It's either that, or they're just gonna be respectful of Lucas' wishes for... however long they need to be.

If there was a condition in Lucas's contract with Disney saying none of the originals could ever be released, they don't have those rights.

When I bought this Blu-ray on the day of its release, back in April of 2016, it played fine. I haven't watched it since then, though.

During tonight's viewing, the picture froze around the 51:20 mark, when the Millennium Falcon is flying through hyperspace, and Rey moves the compressor. It pauses, and then skips forward a few seconds. When I skip back, it pauses at roughly the same time, but in slightly different ways.

The same thing happens just after the 1:23:00 mark, when Leia is looking at BB-8's map section at the Resistance base. The screen freezes and skips ahead a few seconds, but the freeze and skips are somewhat different each time I go back.

Aside from that, the disc plays great.

It could be the way that my Sony Blu-ray player reads the disc, but this is the first time that my two year-old Sony has ever had a problem with a Blu-ray.
I just got TFA about a month ago and went to watch it last week. Mine freezes at 58 minutes and skips ahead to around 1:02:00. That was annoying enough, but then it did it again maybe 20 minutes later. I didn't bother checking the time and just shut it off and angrily went to bed.

I tried in a standalone blu-ray player (sony, but I'm not sure of the model) as well as my PS4 and same thing. The disc is basically spotless (just a light scratch due to the disc tray, I believe, that shouldn't be enough to affect playback.)

Maybe just coincidence, but I figured I'd throw my experience out there since it seems I'm not entirely alone, although it is a different freeze point.

Thanks for chiming in.

It's strange, because mine freezes at around 51:20 to 51:25, skips ahead a few seconds, plays fine until about 30 minutes later, and then the same thing happens.

I'm going to Target in a few minutes to buy a replacement.

I am pretty sure I had some of the earlier individual releases as well. This CBS Fox Jedi box looks REAL familiar.
[Show spoiler]

I counted once and I think I got to 8 or 9 separate releases for each of the original trilogy films, and that was just VHS and DVD releases. Still havent gotten the blue rays though.

So, which one is the "Proper theatrical edition"?
When it comes to the sound mixes, any one of the three used for the 1977 release (Dolby “baby boom” 6-track, Dolby Stereo, or the mono mix for theaters with older technology) would be valid. They do have some differences (the klaxon when Darth Vader boards the Tantive IV, CP3O's lines, etc.), but given they weren't all produced at the exact same time (the mono mix was last) discrepancies were almost inevitable.

Historically, the first home video releases used the 1977 Dolby Stereo mix while releases between 1985 and 1992 used a new, digitally-remastered mix. The last remix before the Lucas' SEs desecrated the OT took place in 1993 for the THX releases, and was also used on the "bonus disc" of the 2006 "Limited Edition" DVD releases.

1977 theatrical: "Baby Boom", Dolby Stereo, mono
1982 -1984 home video: 1977 Dolby Stereo mix
1985 -1992 home video: Digital remaster by Ben Burtt
1993 -2006 home video: THX remaster by Ben Burtt and Gary Summers (primarily a fold-down of "Baby Boom" mix w/ some elements from the mono mix).

Neither Target nor Walmart had The Force Awakens in stock.

It's funny how titles that are all over the place when you're not looking for them suddenly decide to run away and hide when you do go looking for them.

I'm tempted to stick with my skippy disc, since it's only a few seconds of difference, and wait for a bigger better future edition later on, but I'll probably end up getting a replacement from Best Buy on the way home or at some point soon.

If you can't wait to do an exchange, I would recommend getting the region-free UK three-disc (3D + BD + bonus features) release for ~$18 shipped at Amazon.co.uk as it is in stock and has the commentary track which the initial release lacked.

Normally I would, but this was the only set they had that wasn't badly damaged. I also tried checking another store but they only had one copy and it was priced (and scanned) at $89.96.

If Fox customer service isn't able to replace it (which I'm not really expecting them to) I'll probably just get a replacement disc off ebay somewhere down the line. I was primarily buying this for the bonus discs anyway and because the set was in surprisingly mint condition (especially for Walmart).

That's pretty sweet. I read an Amazon complaint, however, stating that the person only received the main disc. I'll play it safe and check Best Buy.

Thanks for the tip, though!

No clue what the other one was but this: OTR, has always meant this: Original Theatrical Release.

When asked about it at this year's Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy completely shot down the idea that she would even attempt to make changes to Lucas's work. She didn't acknowledge any legal clauses that would prevent her, or anyone else, from doing so, but it's clear that things are staying as they are.

“I wouldn’t touch those, are you kidding me? [laughs] Those will always remain his.”
I say again, and add her to the list:

I will always love and respect George Lucas' decisions for what he gave the world.

*I also obtained the despecialized editions since there's no official UOT release.

I will always love and respect my parents for everything they've done for me.

*I also snuck into their liquor cabinet on the regular when I was too young to buy my own.

Has anyone seen ESB:R since Adywan released it recently? Is it worth it?

I wonder if Lucas would’ve been more willing to release the UOT if fans hadn’t been so hateful towards him. That’s probably also why he added Vader’s “NOOOOOOOO!” in Jedi. Isn’t this all just a big FU to certain fans?
