This sums it up for me. It's not just the "no", it's the "no" in addition to all the 2004 DVD Changes/Problems. Maybe I wouldn't have reacted so ferociously if LFL had fixed the majority of the dvd set problems, but it doesn't seem like they did. Maybe then, I could have swallowed this "one change too far" enough to buy the set.

A big part of me wishes Lucas would just leave well enough alone so that he could move on to some new venture. I'd really like to see him direct some other projects. I don't think much of his writing nowadays, but I'd love to see what he could do directing-wise with fresh material.

I'm really on the fence about this one. I have my pre-order with amazon with the gold box discount but now the changes have leaked I'm not sure I want to pay full price.

I never really had a problem with the 97 changes, besides the fact that the CGI has not aged well at all and does not really blend with the movie, but these new things like ewoks blinking (it looks super fake to me) and Vader's "Nooo" are rubbing me the wrong way. I just wish they would have spent the time to really fix what they already had like the lightsaber colors. Besides falling to the whims of GL and what he thinks the movies are.

I guess my main reservation is that I know the holiday season is coming up and the price will drop...Hmmm decisions decisions...

Terrific post. Unless these come in as reference-quality discs, and I don't think they will, the "No" is the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

As for the hatred towards Lucas that others are deriding, I think it stems from a very simple reaction. If you are of a certain age, when you watch the Star Wars OT, you are not just enjoying them for the films themselves, but for the nostalgia. The films take you back to a different time and place, back to that magical first experience.

By messing with the films, Lucas is messing with that nostalgia. So he is introducing a jarring change to the way that the movies were first experienced, and thus changing the original feeling of watching the movies. It is a very discordant feeling.

(Although the changes may seem superficially minor, for many people, the films are practically memorized, so even small changes are jarring.)

I agree people shouldn't make it personal. I've heard a small few nutjobs mention his death(2) but those idiots have either disappeared or been suspended. That is really disturbing, I'll admit. I even responded to some guy yesterday who seemed to be waiting for his death and comparing him to the Nazis. Wow. Just when you think you've heard/read it all. I've seen a few turn their criticism personal.

Others have expressed dislike of his abilities. Most in a reasonable manner, a few over the top completely.

On the other hand, most, including me, have been pretty reasonable. You might see a few drama queens but most people have just expressed their dislike of the change(s), sometimes passionately but most of the time in the manner I try to post in.

I completely agree with you. The guy wanting his death and comparing him to Hitler and book burnings yesterday morning was way over the top. Disturbing, to say the least. There was another this morning. You have to wonder about anyone that would go so far as to hate someone over a movie or to insult them personally. Even if someone doesn't like his filmmaking choices and abilities, there's a polite way to express that.

I still have doubt over that. The news that came out the last few days as really pissed off a lot of fans Of course it's possible a lot of people will still buy it even if they claim they won't but still....I just have my doubts but we shall see soon enough.
