Four identical subs from the same manufacture is the best option. However, it is not always possible as subs become discontinued or because of budgetary concerns. In that case, use 4 subwoofers that have the same size driver and the cabinets are approximately the same size. If the front subs are ported, use ported subs in the rear. Remember that this not rocket science. With patience and proper placement, you can make four subs that are not exactly identical to work with each other, even if you mix ported and sealed.

I wanted to do that on purpose. I am looking for a certain sound. Can't really explain what that sound is. Something like having the sealed box help the ported ones.

I think I will build one just to get that curiosity out my head.
