The slightly less censored international version is kind of a tossup — the extra shot of Marion undressing is good for Norman’s character, the alternate take is maybe a slight improvement, but the extended stabbing is silly. For years, most Hitchcock scholars argued that Hitchcock had deliberately included those bits so that he could give the censors some cuts and still retain the shower scene intact. I don’t know if I believe that, but it would explain why he never fought to have anything restored, even when he was adapting to the new Hollywood tolerance for violence with “Frenzy”.

Even the second additional bit has a sloppy-looking cut where Norman's hands suddenly switch from left to right. I like the additional voyerism shot, but I don't think the other two add much.
I do think it's interesting that the "uncut" version of the third bit has cue marks/cigarette burns. I wonder if that's any kind of hint that the scenes were included in the original US theatrical print. |

I'd like to see the 1.33 version as well. I remember when Milton Arbogast calls Marion's sister. You can see the word GASOLINE behind the pay phone.

Does the remix for this film mean that the music has also been remixed in surround sound? If so, how do you remix music that was originally recorded in mono and make it surround sound?
Which brings me to another question, was the music actually recorded in mono or is that just how it was released for the movie? If it was originally recorded in mono, does that mean all the instruments were being recorded with one microphone? I'm not a recording expert, but I imagine they would've recorded the music with separate microphones which would allow them to mix the music however they wanted. So theoretically, could a stereo soundtrack of Herrmann's original score be released? |

I have a hunch the score was mixed in stereo given the time frame. If it was the 30's or 40's, yes, I could see it being mono only. Jaws was originally shown theatrically in mono, but the Williams' scoring sessions were multi-tracked and that's why you could have the remix be in full stereo and now even pulled into an Atmos session for the 4k release. When the Jaws album was released, it too was in stereo. Another way they could "fake" a stereo recording if the original score was only tracked to mono would be to run it through some enhancement software to add a bit of depth and stereo reverb. It's probably Sony's audio restoration program. They use their software extraction tools to help restore soundtracks that may not have surviving audio stems available and only a mix-down to use. It can separate out certain audio pieces from the greater mix and make new stem elements. They talk about it a little in the Columbia Classics set's booklet. That's how they could create Atmos mixes for Lawrence of Arabia, Gandhi, and Bridge on the River Kwai, for instance. The original audio stems have pretty much deteriorated or been lost over time, so they had to rebuild where they could. Even some films and TV shows you wouldn't consider to be that old did not have their audio elements archived and only a mix down multi-track remains. That's why WB had such a hard time with the first couple seasons of Game of Thones and trying to make Atmos mixes from the mix-down stems as the separate audio pieces were not kept. If they were to try to create better or enhanced mixes, they would have to use such a tool to pick the soundtracks apart again. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 08-08-2020 at 05:01 AM. |

Will the new regular blu ray release include the remastered 4K picture quality. The original disc from several years ago has severe edge enhancement and unnecessary grain management resulting in a waxy presentation. Universal please fix this for the new release.
Anyone have any information about the blu ray transfer that they will be releasing? |

The 2010 blu ray lists "Remastering Psycho HD" as a special feature. It's not actually on the disc though. Does anyone know how it can be seen?
