Max Landis Writing ‘Ghostbusters 3′?

A new report claims that Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis is working on a new draft of Ghostbusters 3 with a three-week turnaround. According to Nikki Finke‘s sources, with that kind of turn around Landis is probably doing more of a polish than a completely new screenplay.

Here’s what Finke had to say:

Quote:
Word is that the execs are mostly happy with it and believe that “all the parts are there, as in beats, structural mechanics, etc, but they’re not all doing their jobs”.
Say what you will about Max Landis’ public persona, but the guy sure knows how to write a great script. Also notable, Max is (of course) the son of director John Landis, who was offered the original Ghostbusters (originally called Ghostsmashers) but turned it down. He’s also directed numerous classic films.

This news comes after Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) reportedly turned down the gig, and Zombieland director and Ant-Man runner-up Ruben Fleischer was mentioned as a potential helmer. Sony/Columbia distributed Fleischer’s Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less.

Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman recently talked about the script after the death of original Ghostbusters cast member Harold Ramis. Reitman had been set to direct the picture, but pulled back to a producing role after his friend passed:

Quote:
The first [script] was done by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, and me, Harold [Ramis] and Dan [Aykroyd] helped them on it. It was a really good script, but then it became clear that Bill really didn’t want to do another Ghostbusters and that it was literally impossible to find him to speak to for the year or two we tried to get it going. When Bill finally…well, he never actually said no, but he never said yes, so there was no way to make that film. We decided to start over again, and I started working with Etan Cohen, with Dan lending a helping hand. Harold got sick about three years ago, and we kept hoping he would get better. I kept pushing forward on the Etan Cohen and we now have a draft that is very good, that the studio is very excited about.

Still waiting to see more from Max Landis before creating an idea around him, sure Chronicle was great, but that may have been a one off. His Frankenstein movie seems to have gone quiet, so here's hoping that one works out.

with Harold Ramis gone I think they should just let the "never reaching production" GB3 lay at rest...but if they do pursue it'd be nice if they CGI'd him as a ghost in the film

We already got GB3 it was the video game that came out in 2009. If they are going to do a GB movie they honestly should just reboot it with a new cast. No Ramis, Murray, Weaver, Reitman, Moranis all you have left is Ackroyd, Potts and Hudson and the last one isnt even a original Ghostbuster. Hell Annie Potts who played Jenine has not done anything relevant since Toy Story 2, or anything on screen since Dangerous Minds in 1996.

The only way I can see this working now is a new cast new story, and MAYBE Ackroyd giving the technology to a new group of scientists in an advisory roles since he would now be the dean or president of some major university. With all this time that has passed maybe Oscar is the head of the new Ghostbusters or something I don't know. At least maybe then you can get a cameo from Weaver and Murray.

Max Landis is denying the reports:

Quote:
Max Landis @Uptomyknees
Hey guys, it pains me to say this, but you know I pride myself on being straight up person. Zero truth to the Ghostbusters report.

Frankenstein, Me Him Her, American Ultra and Mr. Right come out next year. Working on things at Uni and Sony, and indies. GB3, sadly, no.
Nikki Finke has also removed her original story reporting Landis' involvement.

Max Landis’ Hypothetical ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Story Goes Global

Tuesday night’s story about Max Landis potentially doing a polish on Ghostbusters 3 was debunked pretty fast by the screenwriter, but it also lit a fire under his ass. In the hours since since the story broke, was debunked and then deleted, Landis revealed he obviously had been thinking about Ghostbusters 3 a lot. And since he’s not going to actually be writing the screenplay, he decided to lay his ideas out on Twitter.

Landis’ Ghostbusters 3 story isn’t a simple passing of the torch we’d been hearing about for nearly a decade. Instead, it’s a global Ghostbusting affair with franchised teams from all over the globe, one of which goes bad. It’s then up to the main heroes to save the world. It would also explain who Slimer is, work in the mythology and villains of the first film, and more. In short – it sounds really awesome.

Read Max Landis’ Ghostbusters 3 story below.

First up, Landis tweeted about his pre-credits opening to the film earlier Wednesday morning. Some of you might have read this:

Quote:
Haha a bunch of people asking what my Ghostbusters 3 pitch would've been. I never had a full one, just a skeleton I've goofed around with.

My Ghostbusters 3 began in the 1920s with Ivo Shandor murdering a gluttonous associate to protect his cult after he has a moral objection.

Shandor tells the overweight man that nothing can stop the coming of Gozer; first, the gate will open in 1984, then again twenty years later

The fat man, who now has all the details of Shandor's plans, threatens to go to the police, and Shandor poisons him. It's scary, but…

As Shandor escapes, we see that we're in the Sedgewick Hotel, and that the guy we just saw die… …Is Slimer. Cue theme. Show title.
And then, later in the afternoon, he laid out the rest of the story:

Quote:
Thanks for all the kind words on the Ghostbusters opening (and the weird amount of people who don't understand the concept of "opening")

My full movie concerns several new teams (focusing on one), grown from the Ghostbusters Franchise which is now global (and going bankrupt)

Ghostbusters have become a parody of themselves, there are barely twelve ghosts caught a year. People have forgotten what happened in NYC.

Egon passed away, Venkman lives on an island, Winston retired rich. Only Ray Stantz is left in charge, and he's a terrible business man.

In an effort to bring back business, an obsessed team whose station has been shut down attempts to summon a minor ghost… Mistake. Gozer.

It's up to our hero team to stop the bad team, reunite the fractured franchises, and save our dimension from a very pissed off demigod.

It's all very meta (creatively bankrupt Ghostbusters, no one wants the new team, the bad team are slick Michael Bay-versions of the GBs)…

…But you keep the action, comedy, and emotion sincere. Witty, bluecollar guys who are the last people you'd want saving the world.

And I think the teams would be by modern-comedy clique; a Parks/Rec team, a Rogen/Franco team, a Kroll/Key/Peele team…

I don't know. I've thought a lot about Ghostbusters 3. But I'm kind of close on the Akroyd/Ramis side of things so it always felt weird.

So happy to see this got some people pumped, unsurprised by the usual weird amount of hate. That's enough from me about this, I think.
Now, some of you are probably thinking, “Why the hell are you posting this?” Well, it’s not every day an actual Hollywood screenwriter lays out such a well-thought out idea for a film in a public forum. If they do, it’s not for a film that’s so widely discussed, and it’s not an idea that both builds on and expands the franchise in a way that’s essential to making Ghostbusters 3 work after 30-plus years. This sounds like a Ghostbusters 3 I genuinely want to see, and that’s saying a lot.

As for the actual film, if we do ever get to see it, it’ll most likely be the script written by some combination of Etan Cohen, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, possibly with a few other cooks in the kitchen, and may well have some of the elements Landis discussed above. We won’t know until Sony finally greenlights the film, which could be tomorrow or in 10 years.

What do you think about Max Landis’ Ghostbusters 3 story?

Sony would be stupid not to give Landis a shot now...This pitch sounds incredible...Legitimately. I want it to happen so badly now.

This actually sounds pretty cool. I was kind of against a GB3, especially after Ramis passed away, but if this is what they have in mind, count me in.

If GB3 EVER happens, and thats a BIG if. My guess is that the returning cast from the original films will BE as follows:

Dan Aykroyd YES
Ernie Hudson MAAAYBE
Bill Murray NO
Sigourney Weaver NO
Rick Moranis NO
Annie Potts NO
David Margulies NO
William Atherton NO
Peter MacNicol NO
Kurt Fuller NO
Slimer YES

I like it, somehow Anchorman came to mind with rivaling news team. But he should go pitch it to the Sony first. Now that it's out in the open, the story already a little spoiled.

Sounds like it would make a decent flick, granted a bit out of tone for the Ghostbusters franchise to go that meta. I understand Landis wanting to back away from the project.

It actually does sound somewhat good. Very similar to what I imagined would happen with the exception instead of Ray running the Gb they had all retired and Ray was running a university.

The slimer thing i had never thought of that that's nice inclusion. Global thing in not to fond of but it is what it is.

Paul Feig to direct Ghostbusters III? + Reboot to focus on female Ghostbusters?

Quote:
The Hollywood Reporter reports, director Paul Feig ("Bridesmaids," "The Heat") is considering taking on Ghostbusters 3. They caution that "no formal negotiations" have taken place between Feig and Sony Pictures but there appears to be interest from both parties. In fact, their sources went as far as saying Feig is Sony's "first choice."

Update! "Sources say the film will be a reboot focusing on female Ghostbusters." - THR

I actually want them to go ahead with this, so we can stop having all these rumors and "oh it seems to be happening". Who knows, maybe it'll be decent. I'm willing to give it a chance.

Yeah, not like everything has mostly focused on men for most of history, in most cultures.

This is exactly what I have been waiting for and I could definitely get behind. Hopefully this happens and not the horrible female ghostbuster reboot idea. No matter which story they go with, I want it to be in the same continuity and not a reboot of the franchise. That to me would suck.
