Default Solaris

A buddy of mine was commenting that Solaris would be a perfect film to couple with Moon.

Now, C'mon. Let's get this thing done and released on blu-ray in the US.

which one?

Tarkovski's Solyaris (1972) or Soderbergh's Solaris(2002)

I would like both on Bluray soon but Tarkovski's my fave

I am greedy and will take both, but it is more surprising Soderbergh's isn't already on Blu-ray. Seems kind of like a natural.

Oh man, I cannot wait for a BD release of this movie! My wife won't ever forget how this movie made me cry. She laughs at me to this day...

I am not normally a Steven Soderbergh fan but thought that Solaris was an good effort. While Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 original was an undoubted classic, it can be a bit too intellectual and heavy going at times and needs to viewer to tune-in to its wavelength before enjoying it. The remake, while still retaining the artistic core of Lem's story, is more of an everyman's film. The setting's are excellent and the acting quite good. Like others, I am also surprised that it is not already on Blu-ray while Event Horizon, a similarly themed but more superficial film, is already 'out' on BD on both sides of the Atlantic.

Criterion has just officially confirmed (as had been previously hinted) that they will be releasing the original 1972 version in May.
Quote:
We will be announcing new Blu-ray and DVD editions of Solaris as part of our May lineup. We now know that the black-and-white scenes in the film were meant to be tinted blue, and we have updated the feature accordingly. The supplements from the original DVD will not change.

The old DVD edition is officially out of print. However, we are offering it at a 65% discount from the SRP at criterion.com (use the promotion code RHEYA at checkout). We have a limited supply and will fulfill orders as soon as we can.
