When is Solaris coming to blu-ray?

Tell you guys sometimes I like to "kick back" and watch something mellow like "Solaris". Havent heard anything about it. Love the ambience of the film.

Great, great, great film.

Although, Russian film stock of that period can be a tricky thing, so I'm not sure how much it would benefit from Blu-Ray.
The 'Criterion' edition does look excellent, though.


Speaking for myself, much as I love Solaris, the film that really needs a Blu-Ray release (both because of a lacklustre DVD and a film that just really needs to be seen in the highest possible definition, weak film-stock or not) is Bondarchuk's "War and Peace"
Now THAT is something I would pay 'Matrix Collection' type prices for.

I like both versions of SOLARIS a great deal. I would think both would look wonderful in HD on BLU.

It would be nice to see some of the other cuts S. Soderbergh had originally done to his version. According to the audio commentary on the FOX dvd they seemed very interesting with a much longer dock sequence.

I am sure Criterion would love to release the original on Blu eventually... and Criterion does have a good relationship with FOX would be nice to see them create a really nice special edition for the re-vision of the film also.

There is plenty that such a film would benefit from. The Cranes are Flying for example was shown at Cannes with a restored print and the positive feedback was overwhelming. I would agree that many films were damaged by the poor storage conditions that were affiliated with Mosfilm but quite a few Soviet classics have actually been restored in France.
