"i was wondering if u knew anything about what kind of component cables to buy. i have a 1080i tv but i dont have an hdmi output on the back of the tv. i realize i have to buy component cables but i was wondering if u had any idea of a brand name to buy"

Does his 1080i TV have a DVI port on the back? I had mine hooked up with component cables at first, but I then bought a HDMI to DVI converter and used the DVI cable that came with my TV. If he does not already have a DVI cable I'd say get an HDMI cable and an HDMI to DVI converter.

Get a set from Sony that specifically say "PS3" or "PS2" on the box.

You have to buy one that goes PS3 out > component cables.

Use DVI though.. that way the signal stays digital the whole time. Component is analog.

i also have a 1080i TV with no HDMI input in the back. it does, however have a DVI jack. i bought Monster Component Cables and the picture is phenomenal. i can't imagine it being better if i bought an HDMI--->DVI cable.

dvi is going to be your only bet for the best possible picture, unless you want to upgrade your tv. at today's prices its very doable.

DVI is better wether you notice it or not. With component your signal is being converted digital-->analog and then analog-->digital. Any kind of conversion in audio or video degrades the signal some. Your cable is not going to matter as much as converters imo. The difference may be minimal in most cases though I wouldnt worry too much about it.

It is better, take it from a guy who went from component to HDMI.

I also used Monster cables before I switched over, if he has his old cables from a PS2 (if he had one) and they were component then they will work with the PS3 with no modifications needed. I got a set of Monster cables on E-bay for under $25 for my PS2 and just swapped it over to my PS3 when I upgraded. You can get the regular Sony component cables for $19 or so almost anywhere PS3's are sold.
