Default Help picking a sub please

Hey guys I am setting up a ht at my girls bedroom kind of a ht away from home well I moved in with her parents and out of my parents house I still enjoy mine every other weekend and 1 time every week. I have a SUVs pb12 nds. In my ht. bedroom of 12Wx20L I believe. But her room is larger. I have pretty much everything decided/installed Vizio e600i-b2. We are buying the 5.0 pioneer fs-52 set and adding the additional bs-22 to make it 7.0 this weekend. If I hadn't to guess her room size 30-40L x 20W not sure I can post back Sunday night when I am able to measure. Further info This would remain a bedroom set or living room/front room set. So it would remain a secondary setup. Plus I still consider myself an extreme novice.

I am looking to spend $500 maybe 550 max. I was looking for something to make the movies rock. I am currently mulling over 2and have almost ruled out a third, but am open to other suggestions I can review. I am looking to purchase in 2 weeks.

I am more concerned with movies than music but we may listen to a bit but no where near like a movie at reference levels.

I have interest in:
SVS pb-1000
Hsu Vtf-1 mk-2 (maybe mk-4 if it would make a huge diff. At 250rms-1000peak)
The bic pl-200 but read a lot about how muddy it is. So this is looking to be on the out.

Please help in anyway you can. Pros cons of each, your experience, or recommendations. NOTE the floor is carpeted but not thick almost like a throw rug but fully carpeted. Also is downward or front better especially with carpet.

As a side note we are more than 12ft (may eventually sit closer)from main speakers do you think at 35-3/16 tall the fronts are ok should I make a riser of 3.5 putting it at 38.5 inches high.
Thank you so much!

old pics of tv currently 651-ar3 vizio and more storage added.

However my opinion may be a little biased

But biased opinion or not, SVS makes a stellar product as the OP can already vouch for

Cool thank you for the response. The pb12 does not disappoint. I just wished the 12/2000 was a bit closer to my budget. I've been looking at the outlet and on eBay. For the 2000 I would gladly pay over 650 but no luck anywhere. Hell the pb12 I have I would pay 600 for a used one. I really love that thing shakes the room and you feel the power in your chest. Last night my girl was laughing at how much it rattled my windows.

Being in Chicago, why don't you keep your eyes open for a used SVS on CL?

BUT don't pay $600 for it

Oh cool.... Thank you. I have looked but there was nothing speaker wise to peak my interest but I will definitely do that since I have 2 weeks. There were some nice definitive techs. On there but I just wanted something simple. I wasn't about to put 2000 grand and was impressed by the pioneers. Value for what we need at the moment. Thank you again I definitely will keep my eye on CL. Thank you for the heads up with pricing.

I've seen the SVS PB2 Plus used on various forums and CL for $5-$600. My friend recently picked up a third one for $525!!!

Don't ask why. One is enough for most rooms. Damn thing felt like it weighs 200 lbs or so! But I'm sure Billy will tell you that there is always enough room for one more!!!

Take your time one will come up sooner or later.

Thank you for your response. Seems Svs is the way to go. That is the way I was leaning but thought I might give some other a try if people felt it was close between hsu and Svs. Thank you again

If you are not opposed to buying used. I found this on Craigslist in the Chicago area. I used zip code 60647 as a reference point.

Here is a sub that I have heard in the past at DIY speaker meet. Some people say that the 18"+ drivers are not fast enough. I don't know which drivers they were listening to but his sub is a true beast. I can't vouch for the condition of this subs. But for the price they are asking its worth checking out!!!!

The reason why most 18"+ subs are perceived as not fast enough is because most large Home Theater subs are under powered and the cone area is larger and heavier to move compared to the smaller subs.

Most large subs are not made for Home Theater use and are made for one purpose, lots of out-put! There usually used for Large Stadium use so there not worried if the subs are not fast enough, they only worry if the subs can fill the immediate space needed.

Lots of Home Theater subs are 12" and under and are fine tuned for the small spaces there designed for "Homes V.s Auditoriums". I'm not saying large subs can't be fast if designed like any other Home Theater sub, they just need to the care and attention and the right materials as those smaller subs.

Also might I add, the Diver Wars of yester year left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths by being easily impressed over the large cones sold your average white-van sales man.

Large cones with lots of drivers easily impressed people but what they didn't know is that they where very cheaply made, I'm talking paper used for the woofers/mid bass and very under powered for the size of cones used! If you look on Amazon for subs larger then 12" you won't see too many quality Home Theater subs, you'll see the same White Van subs or stadium/car subs "with the exception of ID subs like SVS, HSU, Rythmik, Velodyne"

By the way I love my 15" HSU sub, it's fast, musical and goes very deep with lots of out-put for movies too! One very large sub that gets a lot of praise and is called the definitive Benchmark sub, that all other subs should strive to be is the Seaton SubMersive HP. I only hope to get one, one day....

I think a lot of the "slow vs fast" nonsense(in relation to cone area) was born in the mid to late 1990s. Back then the larger the cone area the deeper the extension...in general.

So 8-10-12 inch subs often only extended to 30-40hz.

The deeper the extension the longer the sound wave. And the longer the sound wave the more time it will take to "decay" in your room.

That is where the subjective sense of "speed" pops up.

Fair enough, but there are a lot of large subs that are under powered or not specifically made for home theater use, then there are the White-Van dealers who know the sub is inadequate and under powered but try to lure in buyers anyways with flashy ads and superficial features...car audio is even worse!

I never understood this terminology when referring to subwoofers.

A speaker does not know where it's located, so what does this have to do with anything? As long as the ohms on the speaker match the amplifier, what difference does it make? There are plenty of people on this forum and others who use car subwoofers in their DIY builds with much success. Not trying to ruffle feathers, just curious as to why you say this....

Car audio is made for a confined space, now I'm not saying you won't have any success using car audio for home use but if you care about sound quality then you would look for speakers designed specifically for home use!

If all subs sounded the same everyone would simply buy from one audio dealer but the fact remains people do hear a difference! Some subs have a muddied sound with no detail, some roll off because there under powered some have port noise...What ever the reason people do here a difference between subs.

I mean no disrespect for people who are into Car audio but that's where the White-Van types are at it the most!

BTW, you have a nice surround setup!

Didn't really answer the question, But Ok........

You mention port noise, muddy with no detail, roll off..........but you do realize that all of these things you mention are also found in a lot of home theater subs, right

I was just saying Ohms isn't the only difference when it comes to sound quality and when referring to "Home Theater use" I mean the way there designed, size, weight, or whether they have a built in AMP...not the fact that they wouldn't sound different per-say?

I'm not going to leave a lengthy explanation on the subject but if your interested there's plenty of discussion in other forums on it.

I realize what you are trying to say, however, my original question was concerning your phrase "not specifically made for home theater use"

I wasn't referring to cabinets.....I was referring to the actual speaker, because the speaker does not know or care where it's being used

Many successful car audio subwoofers have been used for HT applications. Not your ordinary
....... but something along these lines

where this guy used an Infinity car subwoofer for his project.

I'm done, and will step down off my
