I never understood this terminology when referring to subwoofers.

A speaker does not know where it's located, so what does this have to do with anything? As long as the ohms on the speaker match the amplifier, what difference does it make? There are plenty of people on this forum and others who use car subwoofers in their DIY builds with much success. Not trying to ruffle feathers, just curious as to why you say this....
