Most large subs are not made for Home Theater use and are made for one purpose, lots of out-put! There usually used for Large Stadium use so there not worried if the subs are not fast enough, they only worry if the subs can fill the immediate space needed.

Lots of Home Theater subs are 12" and under and are fine tuned for the small spaces there designed for "Homes V.s Auditoriums". I'm not saying large subs can't be fast if designed like any other Home Theater sub, they just need to the care and attention and the right materials as those smaller subs.

Also might I add, the Diver Wars of yester year left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths by being easily impressed over the large cones sold your average white-van sales man.

Large cones with lots of drivers easily impressed people but what they didn't know is that they where very cheaply made, I'm talking paper used for the woofers/mid bass and very under powered for the size of cones used! If you look on Amazon for subs larger then 12" you won't see too many quality Home Theater subs, you'll see the same White Van subs or stadium/car subs "with the exception of ID subs like SVS, HSU, Rythmik, Velodyne"

By the way I love my 15" HSU sub, it's fast, musical and goes very deep with lots of out-put for movies too! One very large sub that gets a lot of praise and is called the definitive Benchmark sub, that all other subs should strive to be is the Seaton SubMersive HP. I only hope to get one, one day....

I think a lot of the "slow vs fast" nonsense(in relation to cone area) was born in the mid to late 1990s. Back then the larger the cone area the deeper the extension...in general.

So 8-10-12 inch subs often only extended to 30-40hz.

The deeper the extension the longer the sound wave. And the longer the sound wave the more time it will take to "decay" in your room.

That is where the subjective sense of "speed" pops up.
