Yup, if they were shot with digital cameras it is possible that they were recorded in 1080i. A lot of these were shot with an intention of being brought to TV like on PBS where they have all those operas and theatres performances that are shot and presented in HDTV standard 1080i.

and if you have a 1080p display it's going to take the 1080i input and make it progressive isn't it?

yes, but only be deinterlacing it and putting it all back together, which most tvs have issues doing correctly.

I can tell the difference in native 1080P and upscaled 1080P.
Anytime you convert something, isn't their a loss? Even if it's small?

1080i looks good, but it's lacking the cripsness of 1080P.
I have 20/20 vision.

If you have a Pioneer KURO you wouldn't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, as it processes it properly.

Too many sets don't though. I'd rather see 1080p.

Fine, but we're not talking about native 1080P sources, are we? If the source is 1080i, then it should be presented as 1080i on the disc. It's up to the player or TV to convert it to 1080P. Assuming that the authoring house will do a better job de-interlacing a truly interlaced (i.e. video) source than your player or monitor is a bad gamble to make. What if their way of de-interlacing is to field-blend it to death, until everything is leaving LSD trails? Is that better than a little combing at home? I think not.

If it started life as 1080i, let it stay that way on blu-ray. Blu-ray should be all about presenting any source material as faithfully as possible. Preserving the original interlacing of an HD video source is one important way to do that.

I understand your point, but don't put it on a Blu disk if it's not 1080P.
When Batman was filmed in the 60's, they never dreamed of standard DVD let alone Blu ray.
I guess all I'm asking is for them to properly encode them in VC1 or MEPG4.

VC-1 and MPEG-4 are capable of doing any resolution interlaced or progressive, they are not there solely for 1080p.

i don't think you are understanding this correctly.

when they shoot them with a digital camera, they are shooting with a camera that is doing 1080i max, no going up from there.

batman was shot on film, which has a resolution well above 1080p, so they can make a 1080p transfer out of that, they can't off shooting the concerts in digital with a 1080i camera.

what you should be asking them for, is to start shooting the concerts in 1080p and not 1080i.

And why not put 1080i on a blu-ray disc if thats the best you can do, it still looks a million times better than a DVD. Its not like they don't clearly state its only 1080i on the package.

1080i60, 1080i50, 1080p30 (formatted as 1080i60 on the discs), 1080p24, etc. are are all different native formats.

A couple of movies (24p) have been coded as 60i but that's another matter.

lol resolution problem.

These concerts were recorded in native 1080i. The transfer can only be as good as the source material.

The original Batman movie was shot with 35mm film. 35mm film has a resolution higher than even 1080p high-definition. Thats why older movies benefit greatly from a high-def transfer as the detail is already there in the master.

Now if these concerts were shot with film you probably be complaining about the film grain.
