If LucasFilm has any official ownership on the original Star Wars film it's a token ownership. It's ownership in name only. Because Fox controls what actually matters.

I can't understand why people don't know what a distribution deal is, or what that term means. It's kinda baffling, actually.

My Hulk disc is copyrighted to Universal. My Spiderman discs are all copyrighted to Columbia, and my X-Men discs are credited to Fox. Following that, some display a trademark copyright for Marvel and associated characters. That distinction is lacking on the Star Wars discs.

Interestingly, my Iron Man 1 & 2 discs show a copyright to Paramount, but my Iron Man 3 disc shows a copyright to Marvel Studios. Wonder what could have happened there.

Default Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Original & Prequel Trilogy - Sept 16, 2011 - Re...

Iron Man 3 was made after Disney bought Marvel and started releasing the movies though Marvel as a distributor. That's why it's different than the first two.

The only Marvel discs I have handy that you didn't just mention are the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. They list copyright for Marvel on the characters and Columbia on the movies. There isn't absolute consistency when it comes to this stuff. But the indica on the Star Wars disc is crystal clear: it's for trademark and that is literally for the title "Star Wars" and the logo. It has nothing to do with video rights.

And for what it's worth: on the Star Wars Blu in the booklet it has credit blocks for all 6 on the last page. The original film and only the original film says "20th Century Fox Presents" in the credit block.

But what does the COPYRIGHT say on the ACTUAL MOVIE? You know, the one that has to be registered with the U.S. Library of Congress identifying the owner of the movie, not the DISTRIBUTOR in the opening title cards?

So want to post another GIF right now...

Of course that's why Iron Man 3 is different - because ownership of the Iron Man property shifted. That's why Star Wars was originally credited to Fox but is now copyrighted to Lucasfilm. Ownership of the property shifted.

In that same booklet, it lists the copyright owner as Lucasfilm. There is no place anywhere on the discs, in that booklet, or in the ending credits that has the copyright symbol next to the word "Fox."

It lists that because the logo is all over the thing. You'll find that same notice on literally every item that uses a Star Wars copyright. The only way to get around it is to release a Star Wars video release that doesn't use the title anywhere but the film itself.

And you guys really should check out the Library of Congress registry. I'll just wait here.

A little hint:

I checked the catalog, and it references the 1997 film print. I don't have any 97 VHS tapes on me, on by 95 release of ANH lists Fox as the copyright holder (the sequels list Lucasfilm exactly as the Blus do) while the DVDs and Blus only list Lucasfilm. Again, where is the Fox copyright on any of the current releases? It's nowhere to be found. Marvel managed to fit their trademark copyright alongsode the actual owner. Is there only room for a trademark copyright on Star Wars?

The Fox logo is on there. The credit block cites Fox on only the one film. The trademark notice is there for the trademarks. Fox doesn't need to bend over backwards to assert their copyright over the first film on a 2011 Blu-ray release that contains 6 films that they controlled on video at the time. You're likely to see something along the lines of the Chucky box where the original film has telltale differences in 2020 when the rights situation changes. But not in 2011.

You guys were wrong. It's cool. Worse things have happened. Man up and admit you were wrong. It's not that hard.

This is wrong. This writer doesn't understand what the terminology means either:

From the Hollywood Reporter:
Quote:
Disney will own and release future films in the Star Wars series (as for potential Indiana Jones films, Paramount retains some distribution rights and future movies will only be made if both Paramount and Disney agree on terms).
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-tie-up-384541

Distribution Rights are NOT Ownership Rights!

Disney can make any movie they want in regards to Indy, they HAVE to use Paramount to Distribute them.

Same goes for Star Wars, EXCEPT, FOX LOSES Distribution Rights come sometime in 2020 for ALL 6 Episodes.

Then, Disney can release them under their own Label!

Go look at the copyrights of other movies. Half of them attribute the copyright to little fake companies that only exist to copyright that film in question. Go look at a movie from some defunct company that has been absorbed by another.

The copyright at the end of the credits is practically worthless.

It CHANGED in 1997. Not to a defunct company. Lucasfilm. From Fox to Lucasfilm.

Aren't you the one saying to check the copyrights?

Look, theres a really quick way for you to prove it to yourselv, Grab your DVD and your Blu-Ray and compare the copyrights printed on the Disks!

You'll see it says c1997-2011 LucasFilm

That means LucasFilm owns it since 1997. The year they bought it back from Fox. In exchange for the rights to distribute the Prequels!

In fact, here is the photo I just took of the Blu-Ray:

Sorry, forgot to flip it...

BOTH say Lucasfilm.
Both used to say Fox.
this shows that Fox no longer OWNS the movie.
Fox can only Distribute it when Disney tells them to.
