Heh. All these new SW flicks from Disney are pretty much what I wish the PT could've had at the time: canonical stories set in and amongst the main chapters to help put certain things in context. The irony is that I doubt that the new films will be as densely plotted as the PT backstory was, so they won't need the extra elucidation. But we're gonna get it anyway, because the Mouse wants a return on his $4B investment.

Suddenly I've got an image in my head of Bob Iger conducting a meeting with all the prospective directors like the bounty hunter scene with Vader in Empire: "You are free to use any methods necessary but I want some box office coin - and no goddamned Jar Jar Binks!" "As you wish."

It should be fun. It's nice knowing we're not going to have to wait 3 years for a next movie either.

The good thing about it is that if we do get a clunker, we'll soon get another movie to focus on instead of having three solid years of biatching about it. Kinda like Thor Dark World getting followed up with Winter Soldier. From the ridiculous to the sublime.

The underlying factors are 1) it's a story no one but Lucas particularly felt needed to be told (I never was playing Star Wars as a kid and heard anyone say, "Gee, I wonder what Darth Vader was like as a cherub faced child or bratty teen"), and 2) what was there (political drama, etc.) just wasn't very well done political drama.

I'm all for complex politics and subtle arcs - it's just that they aren't there. It's just such a superficial story (largely by necessity in a space opera) that it feels very empty and vapid instead of intriguing in most respects.
I actually remember as a kid being fascinated with the idea of the first three episodes being about Anakin Skywalker and the Clone Wars (I remember my dad telling me that Lucas might be working on it after viewing a screening of the entire trilogy-- this was either '91 or '92).

I feel that the films had the potential to be amazing-- you've got a giant war with two Jedi brothers-in-arms (Anakin and Obi Wan), and during the conflict Anakin falls to the dark side and betrays everyone. Meanwhile, you have Palpatine spreading fear and paranoia causing the Republic to give up it's freedoms to become the Empire.

What a grand, epic and tragic trilogy of films that could have been had they been really well done. Instead, as you said, we had a time-wasting kiddie film, a second film where mostly nothing happens except a terribly conceived love story, and then a third film that had to cram every important plot and character point in at the 11th hour because nothing was really developed or built up to properly in the first two.

Oh, but it is. Or at least it will be in just about nine months.

1 - those wings look so flimsy and small... (The split wings)
2 - the Split wings look like the the attached Engines are full circles...

This design is a throwback to Ralph McQuarrie's original concept art for the X-wing.

Although I'm against anything else besides the original trilogy, seeing this it would be interesting to see a Star Wars anime.
It reminded me of old 80s sci-fi anime.

I haven't seen anything that detailed in 20-ish years.
Makes me sad!
