I suppose almost anything with Lucas was possible, but I would hope there will be a true 4K scan done at some point in time and the originals (whether unaltered or SE incarnation) are not held hostage in subpar quality to look uniform. I would think something for UHD BD or 4K streaming will need to be addressed versus upscaling them. It's really a tragedy an 11-year-old scan is the best they can be viewed today when you've got new scans for movies almost unheard of by many.

I don't buy that. IIRC Lucas only gave them something like 3 months to do the whole project (hence the botched audio, various other errors and the low res of the 'restoration') because he decided to do them on a whim while in post-production on Sith, and wanted them out before the end of 2004.

But wait....Didn't George himself approve the transfer for TPM? And if so, then that must mean it's part of his true genius vision. And if THAT'S the case, then shouldn't we be all accepting of it instead of criticizing it?
Well, you don't know me at all then, because I am not a Lucas fanboy.

He is not immune to criticism in my book, and I have criticized many a thing, such as not going far enough when it comes to the OT SE, in terms of consistency (some mentioned by you above) and perfectionism.

I don't know if he approved the transfer of TPM, but if he did, then it must have been on an IPhone, because on my 50inch screen the DNR is rather distractingly obvious. I don't much approve of the American Graffiti transfer either.

I've never really been impressed with Lucas movies on DVD or BD for that matter in terms of PQ. I think the Indiana Jones movies look great, but that is because of Spielberg and not Lucas.

Well if that's the case, then the fact that they haven't even bothered to create new masters after all these years is even more baffling.

Not really.

George Lucas didn't want to.

Why do you (we, etc.) want higher resolution scans? So we can see more detail and clarity.

When Lucas thinks/thought about us seeing the OT in more detail and clarity, he thinks about all the work he "has to do" because when he looks at Star Wars he doesn't see what we see. He sees a very long series of "unfinished shots". And the more detail he lets us see of them, the more he feels he needs to fix/tinker.

The truth is, any UOT that comes out still would need a great deal of clean-up, particularly digital recompositing. It's not just about scanning the film, and depending on which state of the O-Neg you subscribe to, likely substantially more.

The good thing is, technology is good enough at this point that if done well, we shouldn't notice, except that the OT would look more amazing than ever. So that's why I keep my fingers crossed, LOL.

Now that the Celebration has come and gone without a Han Shot First Edition announcement, do you guys think that quashes any hopes of the unaltered trilogy coming out this year? Or could there still be a chance of an announcement coming on May 4th, the way the last Blu Ray set was announced?

I suppose there is always a very, very slight chance it could be announced at the San Diego Comic Con.

Oh yes?
Where was the last Bluray set announced first?
On the internet?
Or in a gathering or something?

Lucasfilm announced the "Complete Saga" Blu Ray set on the Internet May 4th, 2011, because of the "May the Fourth" pun. https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6326

Watching ROTJ right now, shaking my head at the entire music scene in Jabba's palace. The useless CGI characters he added and how terrible the song is compared to the perfectly fine one in the original. Ugh.

This is why I only watch the "despecialized" versions now. Can't bare to watch these inferior cuts any longer.

Well that was just the revelation of what special features were to be included. The actual set itself was announced many months before that.
