R2 is genuinely one of my favorite Star Wars characters, honestly. In some ways he's like the original films, we love them in spite of their clunky limitations, limitations which forced the filmmakers to come up with inventive solutions to creative problems which only seem to make the films more endearing. When you get to the prequels, as with Artoo the effect is lessened by bolting on all this CG shit that looks far fancier (gonna fly now!) but which deflects from the telling of the story at hand.

I'm sorry that completely went over your head. You're completely overlooking why he's the way he is. Why he's arrogant and controlling beyond just being a young adult who has more raw power than any force sensitive individual in the galaxy. He's been ripped from his mother, who was his whole world. Because of this he clearly has attachment and fear of loss issues to the people he keeps close. He's under orders from the Jedi to shut those feelings down, as opposed to talking about them, which is the role Padme plays in his emotional growth. And last but not least he's been subtly prodded by Palpatine to explore those feelings of greed and self-centeredness. And then he loses his mother, who he hasn't seen in a decade, savagely and suddenly. Those are a clear recipe for who he is emotionally at that stage in the film.

And I know people throw around the "people just wanted to see him as Darth Vader going around killing people" thing (including Lucas himself) but I just don't think thats the case. I LIKED the idea that he was Anakin in the entire trilogy, and that Lucas withheld putting him into that costume until the very end. I just don't think he really took the great story elements he had and fleshed them out the way they should have. The whole trilogy feels pretty empty to me and a missed opportunity to tell a grand tragic story.

The suit is just a reflection of the loss of his humanity and little more. The problem with fans is that they focus too much on these superficialities and forget to think about why he's in the suit, which is a far more fascinating subject and one that Lucas rightly explored thoroughly in the films.

Wow, I had no idea Lucas made those films! How can I watch them??!! The only ones I've seen show a pouty little brat having a temper tantrum, getting burnt up, and him waking up as they are putting on the suit.

Take the Episode 1 Blu-ray and put it in your Blu-ray player and watch them. Then do the same for the following two episodes. Easy.

not if you want to keep your sanity... I tried watching episodes 1 and 2 the other week. I couldn't make it more than halfway through before I had to stop and eject the discs.. just painful

I'm introducing a friend of mine to the beauty that is Star Wars tonight. We'll be starting off with the original trilogy, then the prequel trilogy tomorrow night. We made a deal a few months ago that if I watch all the Harry Potter movies, she'll watch Star Wars. Harry Potter was alright, I certainly didn't hate it. But it's finally my turn.
