Think about it-- before Episode VII, they release the digital editions, and then repackage the "Complete Saga" Blu-Ray and sell that. And we all know those versions leave a lot to be desired (and I don't mean your preference on the alterations). The original films are the old outdated Lowry scans created for the DVD set, Episode I has a hefty dose of DNR, the extras are kinda paltry, etc.

But Disney knows that a much better release of Star Wars could be made, and are likely working on it now. Which is why they're making as much money off of these initial versions as they can now, because they know that these are going to be pretty much worthless and outdated once they unleash their brand new 4K remastered versions, possibly in some kind of ultimate set with a crap ton of bonus features.
Agreed. But Lucasfilm being Lucasfilm I doubt we're ever gonna get a ''definitive" one-stop-shop edition in terms of extras, the bastards never went in for that sort of thing and Disney themselves can't be arsed with making decent extras for their stuff either.

I'd love it if they enlisted Charlie de Lauzirika, even if just for this fabled Star Wars set. Imagine the Star Wars movies given the Alien Anthology/Blade Runner treatment...

Disney should do a double pack of the originals. One disc with the restored unaltered version. And the other with an all new "Special Edition" that keeps all the good stuff and removes all the bad stuff.

Take out Jabba in ANH
Han shoots first
No annoying singing in Jabba's palace
No Hayden in ROTJ
Add back the original ending of ROTJ
etc.

Things they can keep are:
The expanded exterior view of Cloud City
Palapitine in TESB
The Wampa, maybe. (Seeing it can be cool, but then again it might be more suspenseful not seeing it)
The scene with Biggs in ANH

They can call it the "Disney Special Edition" and throw out all the other SE versions.

A double pack like that would be awesome. The unaltered version, and the enchanted version.

I wouldn't mind a double pack but as far as the special editions go I'm kind of a stickler now.

I used to be all on board with the changes but as time went on I found myself liking them less and less. Now I don't prefer any of the changes to the original versions, even things like the emperor in ESB.

Fox doesn't "control" jack shit. Fox agreed in a contract to distribute movies in theaters and then-existing media formats when LucasFilm told them to do so. Fox has the job through the end of the decade. For their work, 20th Century Fox receives a fee and a percentage. That's it. We're back here again? How many times do we have to go through this?

Like I said pages ago, let's just agree that Fox at least co-owns IV with Lucasfilm.

And I still want to believe that nearing the end of a decade that there'll be a miracle and Fox will be able to also keep theatrical, TV, and physical home video rights for the remaining 5 while Disney/Lucasfilm gets everything else.

But like I also said, if Disney doesn't keep the Fox logo and fanfare, I'm gonna complain (though I don't see how they could snafu it considering their loyal and caring about their customers).

I want a refund! The "Complete Saga" is no longer complete. Real dirty.

Are they?
  • Cropping both Aladidn sequels
  • overuse of DNR on Sword in the Stone and Robin Hood
  • Not including the extended cut of Bedknobs and Broomsticks on the Blu-ray
  • Refusing to cancel an order, which was still on pre-order and hadn't shipped yet, on DisneyStore.com
  • And a multitude of other things I don't have time to mention right now.

Yet they care about us...

Fos does not co-own IV. They have perpetual distribution rights to the movie (until they get bought out or horse-traded). Meaning, once again, Fox gets a fee and a cut when LucasFilm directs them to release the film. Distribution rights are not ownership. Fox just gets the job.

It hasn't been confirmed that the Blu-rays are cropped.

Not Robin Hood, at least not in the same horrendous amount as Sword in The Stone and Mickey's Christmas Carol. Plus, you don't see them overdoing the DNR anymore since those 2.

Well, who knows that reason. On the bright side, we got the Theatrical Version on Blu/DVD.

The digital version is cropped, that's what I bought, and that's what I care about (until I buy the BD).

My eyes are horrified every time I watch those movies, in their ugly cropped format.

Yeah, I want to apologize, first off. And I know you guys are getting sick and tired of it. It's just the 6 original films have always been Fox films to me (in defense they co-produced IV and distributed the remaining 5) and are part of Fox's legacy. They even have at least still TV rights to The Princess Bride and Highlander. I just don't want to live in a world where Disney removes the Fox logo and fanfare from the 5 films and tarnish all I care about. The fact they're in there (and that they have been ever since day one) make it all the more the same they are part of Fox. I should be grateful that Fox will at least (co-)own IV for perpetuity, but is Fox keeping at least some distribution rights for the others too much to ask?

But like I said, keep everything in the films as is, there's not going to be a problem.

But that's just the digital version, that doesn't mean the Blu-ray will be cropped (yet). Now that I say that, that just proves the removal of the Fox logo and fanfare from the post-ANH was just for that only. And even if Aladdin II and III are planned to be cropped, we could always get 1.66:1 as a compromise. At any rate, why not just ask Disney to keep them in the OAR's?

By "control" I was referring to the BD/DVD release rights, which remain at Fox for all six films thru 2020 (and for Ep IV in perpetuity). Obviously there is some level of coordination between Fox & Disney/Lucasfilm; otherwise (a) Ep IV wouldn't have been in any of the digital bundles and (b) the earlier BDs wouldn't have returned to stores around the time of the digital release.

Edit: More specifically, I was replying to someone who was expecting Disney discs in the new sets. Even assuming Disney told Fox when to release them, barring any new contracts the OT & PT won't be on Disney discs till after 2020 (and Ep IV never will be). OTOH, everything from The Force Awakens on *will* be on Disney discs from the beginning.

Original ending to RotJ? You mean with the horrific Ewok jingle? No thank you, that can stay gone. I'd rather see the universe celebrate the end of the Empire.

I can't believe you just said that.

The original ending is 100 TIMES BETTER than the CGI filled Special Edition ending.

Honestly, I don't even know what is different outside of the jingle being gone and it just shows the universe celebrating the defeat of the empire. It's not like they cut anything actually out of it.

The scene on Endor is longer in the original. And the music is changed in the SE.

Also, it's a FOREST moon, not a "jungle" moon.

In Return of the Jedi, they land on the Forest Moon of Endor.
