It's all in the recent 'making of' book: Marquand was on first unit, Lucas did second (meaning he was regularly on-set to, ah, advise the actors) and once Marquand delivered his contractual cut then the movie was out of his hands, Lucas took it from there.

And depending on who you listen to Richard didn't say much at all on set.

I will NEVER understand the attitude that dismisses an artist wholesale because of one thing (or many things, likely, in this case) that you don't like. I get that the old movies were probably pretty important to you, so you're disgruntled and angry over Lucas' inconsideration of your feelings, but he's a 'fool' and 'a condescending jerk?'

He did happen to create the thing that brought you here in the first place, regardless if you like or dislike the subsequent changes and additions to his mythology. This 'it's all one way or no way' mentality that insists that everything is black and white and he's wrong and you're right is lazy and short-sighted thinking. Bash the work all you like, pick it apart all you like and refuse to participate in it all you like, but if you're old enough to type, you're old enough to understand the nature of collaboration and the fact that he owned these movies personally and by all accounts had more than a hand in their direction. If he's such a 'fool,' how did the first movie get made in the first place?

Look, I'm not an 'apologist'- whatever the vernacular meaning of that has become- but a little bit of perspective can be a conscious-expanding thing.

Lucas became a Fool when he just could not stop going back and changing things with each release. There comes a point when an Artist has to let it alone and move on, and look back on the Art as a representation of who they were when they made it. Lucas might have created Star Wars in general and owned it, but he didn't make it alone, he didn't do the acting on his own, he didn't build sets props or do visual Effects on his own, Countless people came together. Lucas owning it might give him the legal right to go back and keep changing things, but it becomes wrong to do it to the point where you are tampering and even replacing the work other people did for you.

Finally George got smart again and sold it all, and letting things stand as they are. the Jerk part comes with his refusal to preserve the original versions of the films and insisting the revisions would replace them, and refusing to make the originals available in their original form.

with what Star Wars did for him Financially, and all the awards it took in, and revolutionized Cinema, he should have done properly preserved versions of them.

In 1997, they released what they called Lucas' "Definitive Vision" of the star Wars Trilogy, well he obviously still wasnt satisfied

I hated when Mann added The Joker and Harvey Dent to Heat.

glad I'm not the only person who saw it, then. And I know it was longer then 5 seconds. did you notice the weird artifacting problem I was talking about too, when the spacecrafts are flying through space? it's noticeable quite so, because of the black background... and it seems to happen in about 1/3 of all space battle scenes, I think.

I'm not even being critical, I'm just pointing out major flaws in the release... the artifacting I mentioned wasn't in the vhs versions as far as I can remember. And the quality wasn't good at all, but at least it was consistent... and lets be honest when we watched these movies as a kid, none of us appreciated, or even could appreciate minute things such as a/v and picture quality.

unless you guys are all like, 40+ years old and saw the movies as a kid. because I'm not, i'm 23, lol.

And ultimately I was talking about what made Lucas a fool, not what did or din't make someone else a fool.

Lucas built his Empire and sat on his high horse, he had the resources to preserve the Original versions of his films, and the Demand has been there for quite sometime.

Lucas also milked as much as he could out of his films, yet didn't milk them more buy giving the original versions a proper DVD or Blu Ray release, instead only laserdisc transfer to DVD. Thats Foolish
