Maybe the Vader material wasn't good enough.

Vader is probably easier to **** up than they thought.

Not according to G Lucas they aren't. He states on the commentary for ROTS that it was necessary for the same or similar situations to be repeated for the characters of the prequel trilogy as in the original trilogy. Such as the central hero being plucked from obscurity when a secret mission encroaches on his humble homeworld and sweeps him off his feet, the technologically advanced culture being defied by the less advanced one etc, large spherical objects needing to be destroyed in space etc, etc.

Do you have a source for that?

WWII story covers a lot of ground. Hanover Street is a WWII movie. Casablanca is a WWII movie. Dad's Army is a WWII movie.

Agreed about Clones but III and VI simply having similar titles does not make the movies themselves similar. They're about as different as can be.

That's a big enough similarity to me [emoji6]
Lucas pursuing merchandising rights during the making of Star Wars would indicate he intended to sell toys all along. That doesn't mean he didn't have something to say with the movies he made all along. Though whether you agree with/like what he had to say might be an issue. Point being, even with his emphasis on creating a mythology for kids, he ALWAYS went about it like the shrewd businessman he is.

The negative reactions towards The Force Awakens come across as silly to me. Tell me, would you rather have a movie that is very similar to what came before, or a movie that shits over the entire franchise by ignoring established rules and getting the characters and setting completely wrong? You think you know what it's like for a longtime fan to feel betrayed? Then you haven't seen Highlander: The Source.

This is by far the most lame and overused argument against TFA.

Sure, but Lucas still made sure that the 'rhyming' was present and correct in Sith, albeit with a twist. Instead of the movie ending with Palps sitting in his throne as his would-be apprentice battles a Sith in front of him while a space battle carries on in the background, it begins with that instead - only Anakin follows the advice of Palps and slays the crippled Dooku as opposed to Luke throwing his 'saber away and renouncing the dark side.

Sith also shows a tree-dwelling race of fuzzy furrys taking on an evil army, this time it's Wookiees instead of Ewoks (though any fan worth their salt will recall that Wookiees were the original choice for Jedi's end battle, but then Lucas cut them in half and jumbled up their name).

Clones also does this too, e.g. the movie ends with a battle of white-armour clad troopers advancing on their enemy from screen right whereas Empire starts with just such a battle, and the main combatants also share a certain philosophy: in Empire it's the Rebels vs the Empire, whereas in Clones it's about the 'rebel' Separatists vs the Republic. Sometimes it's not only about rhyming but mirroring from a different perspective, like the ice world of Hoth vs the rusty desert of Geonosis.

And, in the same movies, Bespin became Kamino. It's a city above water instead of clouds! And how could we forget the Fett boys.

Oh, and another example of Sith mirroring Jedi, we have Jabba and Grievous, the minor villain that's out of the way by the time we're reaching the middle of the film and it's time to start focusing on the real villains (in both cases, Palpatine and Anakin/Vader).

If it was a remake, then that would mean A New Hope didn't happen in the same continuity. Just like how the 1998 remake of Psycho isn't in the same continuity as the original 1960 version. The Force Awakens is not a remake, it's a sequel.

Thanks. Yeah, I probably should have said "re-imagining." Sure, the characters continue the story... But the plot is basically the same, scenes are recycled, and the way certain things are shot are nearly identical to A New Hope.

It's interesting how a bunch of sand can either be a lazy, uninspired rehash of stuff we've seen before or a rusty desert mirroring Hoth all depending on how one looks at it.

And I'm only saying that half sarcastically.

It is kind of interesting.

Context is key, my main man. Transposing a battle from ice to fire is one thing, as is turning a city in the clouds into a city under the sea, but having a wistful young 'un who's very handy with tech stuff who dreams of a brighter future who's trapped on a desert dustball of a planet repeated three times in seven movies is kinda pushing it, at least it is from my interesting perspective.

The prequel trilogy is a complete rehash of the originals. AotC is a complete rehash of Empire. RotS is RotJ where the bad guys win, even its title represents that.

You act like TFA rehashing a prior film is something new, the worst thing that could've happened to this film, but it really isn't.

You all said you wanted to go back to the old feel of the originals, but now you wanted something new? Make up your mind.
Exactly!
