FYI: Some DVD players on the market currently do the same thing and have zero pause between layer changes. It is not a very difficult thing to do and just silly that every halfway decent DVD player doesn't incorporate a decent buffer to accomplish this.

I agree.

RAM has become so inexpesive that any decent player (DVD, HD DVD, or Blu-ray) should have enough of a buffer to eliminate *any* noticeable pause. It's just a matter of having a buffer large enough to cover the bit rate (2X or the planned 4X, etc.) times the switch over time. Even at 4X and an unbelieveable 5 second switch over time this has to be less than 100 MB of RAM -- a trivial amount these days.

Thus once the pause is gone it does not matter how many layers there are (1, 2, 4, or 8).
