Actually, flipping around HBO, I can't even tell you how many times I've watched the last 15-20 minutes.

But yeah, we both agree that it will be profitable in the end.

Oh, and one thing to consider is how much the cost of making these sorts of films is increasing. I mean, sure, $260M might be a bit over-the-top. But I would love to see the breakdown sometime. How much cast cost, how much CGI, how much all the stuff really cost. I know that's not going to happen, but I would really like to see that -- especially for a film like this.
I'm thinking of the first three films, where each one was less successful than the last. It's very common to see that when the original is a smash hit and cultural phenomenon like Jurassic Park was, the original Star Wars trilogy being another example. Of course, in JP's case it probably didn't help that the sequels are - and especially were at the time - widely regarded to be bad movies and disappointing compared to the original. A sequel that was universally agreed to be a really, really good movie might have a chance to outperform JW, but... I don't think that's likely to happen.

But yes, again, either way it'll be successful. Universal don't have to worry about it too much.

Made for the perfect whirlwind of summer nostalgia that got butts in the seats..

I feel like this second time around they'll either need to hit the story out of the park, or just have something amazing going on, otherwise I wouldn't be shocked if the money this rakes in is simply good to avg.

I wouldn't expect if its just a rehash or jumble of ideas to hit the same home run the first one did.
I think that definitely played a part, yeah. Seeing the theme park fully realized and open to the public is something I know many of us - myself included - would dream of back in the '90s and early '00s. It was one of those ideas that seemed so obvious yet like it would never happen. But JW actually went and did it, and then add in 15 years of pent-up hopes and expectations and you get a perfect storm of a sequel.

I don't think the next film can top that, partly because the public got served what they wanted and partly because what they're doing with JP5 doesn't seem like something that would pull in the crowds to the same extent. According to the small bits of info dropped by Trevorrow, the rumors, plus the obvious sequel set-up in JW, we're getting more of the military/hybrid angle as well as a mainland setting. The former is something even many of JW's fans don't love about the movie, and the latter is something a lot of people always disliked about The Lost World. Personally I love the hell out of it, but when TLW was released back in '97 I only really remember hearing complaints about the San Diego sequence; how ridiculous and out of place it was in the franchise -- including from kids my age!

You really can't blame them though. What did people praise about JW? The insanely over-the-top cheesefest ending with tons of dinos fighting. So what are they going to triple-down on in the next one? That stuff, obviously. I expect it to be a schlockfest of the highest order.
You know, I watched JW again just yesterday, and while I really enjoy the movie overall, each viewing further solidifies my stance on the ending being perhaps a bit too over-the-top. The build-up is pretty much perfect, and the return of ol' Rexy still gets my blood pumping after five or so viewings, but once the T. rex and I. rex start fighting Godzilla-style (it doesn't help that the whole fight borrows heavily from the 2014 Godzilla film!), Blue joins in and then the Mosasaurus jumps out of the water to deal the killing blow... it goes a bit too far. It's still fun in its own way, don't get me wrong, but I think it would have been better if they had toned it down some.

Had it been up to me, I would have preferred for it to just be T. rex vs. I. rex, no further involvement from other dinosaurs. I'd have the T. rex struggle (old age and underdog status and all), but eventually get a fatal bite in. The Mosasaurus "stealing" the kill just feels wrong to me since it's supposed to be all about the rex "reclaiming its throne", and the Mosasaurus already gets its climax/"holy shit" moment when it eats Zara and the Pteranodon.

Yeah I mean our culture seems to love people getting eaten by animals so I think it'll make a good chunk of money, unless word of mouth is just batman vs. superman bad...Ontop of the people seem to stick with franchises so its got all the Jurassic fans and new JW ones it created. So it'll make money, but like you said ALL time leader in box office or close to it a second time around, I would bet against it.

I'm a big fan of the movie until the third act. The raptor hunt and over-the-top climax ruins the film for me. Just a little too stupid, and in the case of the raptors it goes against everything they said in act one. It really bums me out.

Enough people have praised that third act I fully expect the sequel to be more of that though.

I get where you're coming from. The first half or so is pretty much in line with the first two films in terms of tone, having a pretty good balance of serious and light, and keeps things at a level where it feels believable enough. Then once all hell breaks loose it goes completely insane, and we get stuff like the owner of the park personally piloting a helicopter to take down the I. rex, the I. rex talking the raptors into switching sides, the four-way dino brawl, etc.

I mean, again, I really enjoy all the mayhem, it feels like a throwback to old monster movies to me. But I also totally get how it could be a turn off to others, especially if they wanted something more like the original. It really is quite ridiculous.

Don't know of other people and what they liked most about it, but as I've said many times what finally got me to appreciate the film was the chemistry between Pratt and BDH. I mean, I dig the dinosaurs sure, but some of the moment between Pratt and BDH made the movie for me.

I actually think all the main actors do well with their characters, and I find them all interesting/likable enough. Also, after finishing my latest JP marathon, I have to say going from JPIII to JW really makes me appreciate the latter; it actually feels like a real movie with plot and characters. JPIII really isn't much more than a montage of dinosaur attack scenes with the thinnest possible plot there to tie them together.

Yes. All of the above. I liked JW a lot, despite some moments balancing on the boundary of the acceptable. But that third act was way over the top on different levels, leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It was just way too silly and went too far with it. I felt I was suddenly watching a movie on the same level of Transformers. Fun? Kinda, but nothing else and totally out of place compared with the rest of the movie and the whole franchise.

I share the fear this might be the tone for future movies. Since it probably will be a case of more, bigger and therefore less realistic, ... Since I feel they already 'jumped the shark' in the previous one, I can't imagine how far they will take this.

Nonetheless, I will check it out. Jurassic Park is the Star Wars of my generation.

Sam Neill Says Alan Grant Not Returning for Jurassic World 2
By Max Evry on September 26, 2016

Sam Neill says Alan Grant not returning for Jurassic World 2

While the upcoming Jurassic World 2 is set to begin production in Hawaii and London in February 2017, it looks as if one legacy cast member will not be returning: Sam Neill. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople actor -who recently revealed a role in Thor: Ragnarok– told Shortlist (via Screen Rant) not to expect his Dr. Alan Grant to make any new trips into dino country.
“I think the problem is that no one knows where Alan Grant is anymore,” Neill said, filling in his own backstory. “He’s retired from paleontology. He’s sick to death of dinosaurs and running. He’s not quite as fleet of foot as he was, and he’s now retired to Dayton, Ohio, and has a very successful accountancy business. I think that’s what’s happened to Alan. Either that or he’s dead. How do you recover from all of that stuff? I don’t think therapists are trained to deal with post-dino stuff. No. I don’t think you get over it. Accountancy would be one way.”
Wether Neill, who reprised the role for 2001’s coldly-recieved Jurassic Park III, doesn’t want to return to the role or is playing coy is up to debate (his tone is pretty playful), but according to him he has not been approached by Universal.
“The call hasn’t come,” Neill stated. “And no one can find Grant. He’s disappeared. Someone found his hat. His hat was floating on the Hudson river, but that was the last ever heard of him.”
Neill’s original co-star Jeff Goldblum has said he’d be open to reprising his Ian Malcolm character from Jurassic Park and The Lost World, and fans would love to see Grant and Malcolm together onscreen again for the first time since 1993. Whether the filmmakers will give in to nostalgia or keep the series moving forward with the new characters they’ve established has yet to be seen.

The Impossible and A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona will direct the Jurassic World 2 from a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. Trevorrow decided to hand over the director’s chair for the sequel, opting to journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Episode IX. He previously revealed the quote from the original Jurassic Park that inspired their idea for the sequel, which comes from Sam Neil’s Alan Grant: “Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?”

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will both reprise their roles for the film. Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg will produce the film, which is set for release on June 22, 2018.

Released in 2015, Jurassic World brought in over $652 million at the domestic box office and over $1.67 billion worldwide.

I don't know, he did JPIII. I feel like this has to at least be better than that.

It could be cool if they save the old characters for the sixth and supposedly final film. But, of course, it depends on the story and whether or not it makes sense to bring them back.

Better leave Grant out of it. He'd return as a supporting character at best, anyway, and that wouldn't sit well with me.

Doesn't sound like Grant could even be bothered to go on another adventure anyway.

Jurassic World 2 Will Be ‘More Suspenseful’ & Include Animatronics!!

Quote:
“There will be animatronics for sure. We’ll follow the same general rule as all of the films in the franchise which is the animatronic dinosaurs are best used when standing still or moving at the hips or the neck. They can’t run or perform complex physical actions, and anything beyond that you go to animation. The same rules applied in Jurassic Park.”

“It will be more suspenseful and scary. It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skillset.”
