IMO, book 1 got me hooked, book 2 blew my mind, book 3 kept the greatness going, book 4 had an amazing backstory, book 5 brought things to a halt when they got to Calla, book 6 blew my mind for the second time, and book 7 was great and finished great.

I haven't read Insomina, but it is on my list.
I am halfway through Black House right now and it has gotten good.
Every now and again I read something that makes my skin shiver and it's usually with King.

In The Wastelands it was when the Tick-Tock Man is asked to say "my life for you" - I shouted out loud.

In Black House it is when Jack gets the present on his doorstep with a foot inside and reads the note - that got me real good.

King could be bronzed 100 times over for his written word.

Well worth starting it, but I'd look along the way and see what is referenced and perhaps make sure you've read some other books.

The complete list of other works referenced in The Dark Tower series is here:

True, Insomnia is a great read and includes some important background info. about PATRICK DANVILLE and DANDELO...there are other important references like IT and BLACK HOUSE but I say PATRICK DANVILLE in INSOMNIA because of his significant role in letting us "the reader" understand what a powerful tool the imagination can be. Understanding Stephen King's use of DRAMATIC IRONY with this character is particularly important to the stories finish ...

I am pretty sure I've read Insomnia, but I shall have to check before I move onto The Dark Tower IV.

It's pretty hard though, I'm dying to find out what happens on the friggin' train.

Yes THEY have. They have published the 1st two storylines into hardcover collections. The first story arc was called "The Gunslinger Born". The story takes place during the Susan Delgado portion of "Wizards and Glass". The story adds more behind the scenes plots and it really fits into the Dark Tower timeline very well.

The 2nd collection is called "The Long Road Home" and tells the story of how Roland and his ka-tet made it home after the tragic events in Hambry.

Marvel just started a 3rd Dark Tower storyline that continues the behind the scene story of Roland and his young friends.

If you like the Dark Tower comics, Marvel has just started publishing a series on The Stand. The first five story arc is called Captain Tripps.

I liked it so much I went out and bought the expanded version of The Stand. I read The Stand when it came out in the late 70's, but this version is a couple of hundreds pages LONGER! Awesome! More Stand to read and enjoy!

I would agree with the best of the Dark Tower stories is "Wizard and Glass". But my next favorite Dark Tower novel would be book 5, Wolves of the Calla. This story featured elements from The Magnicifent Seven, Harry Potter, and Doctor Doom!

No way, just read the Dark Tower series all the way through. There's nothing in any of his other books that are "essential" to understanding the story.

I really don't know how to summarize the 7 books in the story so that you'll understand what it is about without giving away a lot of the plot. I guess, in a nutshell, it is the quest of Roland, the last gunslinger, to set the world right. Along the way, he recruits several apprentices to help him in his quest. I realize this doesn't sound very exciting, but believe me and all of the others who say this is probably THE best story EVER told (yes, even better than LOTR). I won't say more except to start reading it.
Thanks for the info! lol and just to set the record straight... YOU cant be a huge STEPHEN King fan and not know how to spell his name!!! Not STEVEN... ha, i joke i joke

Ah but I am a Constant Reader and hence I don't just want to understand the story but fully absorb and experience it.

I have to say, now at page 550 of Black House, even though the references are few and far between, I am SOOOOO glad I took the time to read it. I had tears in my eyes and goosebumps all down my arms reading about Parkus explaining to Jack about the Crimson King, the Beams, that Roland may no longer be the last Gunslinger and that there are three more he has trained, Sophie speaking the high language, etc., etc. Looking forward to seeing how the Black House ends up - Jack has just discovered Henry in his studio and listened to his final tape.

Absolute magic.

Plus The Talisman is absolutely one of King's best God-pounding books (credit to Mr. Straub as well of course) right here and now, so to journey back into the land of The Territories has been most enjoyable too once the book finally got going around page 200.

Ha, ha - I only highlighted the first centimetre to make sure you were just stitching me up before I read the rest. I can't wait for Wizard and Glass, I know it's going to be awesome.

Yes but I would argue you would almost get more out of everything you just mentioned if you had already finished the Dark Tower series. Doesn't really matter either way, is my point. I just wouldn't put off reading such a great tale, but whatever floats ya boat

I'm sure it doesn't, as leaving anything essential out of the series would be absurd, but chronologically Black House fits in with the story of The Dark Tower perfectly between III and IV, even if it was written after IV, so it really fit in well to me to read it there. If you read it between I and II you wouldn't get any of the references.

Plenty of people waited 6 years between III and IV - I don't mind waiting 6 weeks!

Okay so I have finished reading both Black House and on Sunday completed Insomnia, two great reads!! There was definitely a lot of cool references in both books, but far moreso in Insomnia. Whilst I can see that neither were in any way imperative to continuing on with The Dark Tower, I’m very glad I did. When they’re inside the Civic Centre in Derry and the little boy Patrick has a drawing of Roland and the Crimson King I just shivered out loud if you know what I mean. It’s so very cool the way this is coming about and I have no idea whether Patrick’s accomplishments at the age of 18 have anything to do with TDT or not, but I look forward to finding out.
So I’m back on that damn monorail again and at 50 pages in I know how that particular scene has played out. I am very excited to be back with Eddie, Susannah, Roland, Jake and Oy again and can’t wait to continue forward. What an incredible story and massive scope this idea really encompasses.

HBO or Showtime series based on all the books. I would subscribe for life to which ever one did it.
