Not to mention the DVDs have different versions of the movies themselves.

No way dude. Anakin brought balance to the force. Of course after screwing it up but hey that is a small note.

As for Obi Wan, I was debating Luke vs Anakin. Obi Wan is another matter.

Here is my criteria:

Most presence timewise in the movies, biggest/most face on posters in total, quality of story, first face in oldest movie to last presence closest to end of OT, earliest in script chronological of finished skeleton of story, and finally bad ass quality where killing and atonement take on the widest range therefore making most compelling story.

You see Luke was never bad (though a crying little girl many times over) so therefore not as much growth and not as much story.

Lucas made it Anakin story early on and if one watches the 6 films in special form, it is very clear. I trust his (fluid) vision as a creator.

Btw, I agree about the DVD's being kept because of old extras being dropped off. Not because of the older beta versions of the movie with one excetion. Star Wars in original form holds a place in my heart as unspecial. The rest are flawed and don't stand as films as their own including ESB. I will never accept it as a better movie.

Does anyone think Disney might doing something next year for the 40th anniversary of ANH?

We really need an archive box set ala Blade Runner. It would be massive, it would be pricey but my god would it be worth it!

Yeah, I canned my VHS and my laserdisc player gave up the ghost years ago so I wouldn't mind seeing a release of the '97 versions just for archival purposes. At least in the '97 versions we get Sebastian Shaw and Han' s 'Trust Me' line when rescuing Lando from the Sarlacc.

That line's only in the theatrical cut.

That's right. The only reason I'm sure of this is because I remember a few of us in the theatre in '97 cracking up when Han said the new thing. They say the essence of humour is surprise; the new line is a tiny bit funnier than what was there before, but I think the central reason we all laughed was because we just weren't expecting it, and it's (a) a strange thing to change and (b) such a comparative mouthful.

If I ever need a go-to example of a change to which I'm 100% indifferent, it's that one.

Your post made me google the "trust me" line. I read that Han originally says "Trust me!" and now he says "I can see a lot better!" Where does Lucas get all these alternative lines that he uses to replace existing ones? Was there an alternative take of Harrison Ford saying the line? And where did Vader's "Noooo" in ROTJ come from? Alternate take? A new recording of James Earl Jones?

The "Noooooo" is a new recording by JEJ.

Lucas showed up at James Earl Jones' house one day and told him he was having all of his voice work replaced by Hayden Christensen. Jones yelled out "NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" and Lucas recorded it and then ran home.

Damn that Lucas. I knew that part sounded different. Well at least the final Lucas version can't be changed anymore. I accept the bluray box set as still classic movies.

For some reason, I thought it was recycled from Revenge of the Sith. (shrug)

People talk about George Lucas's vision, and I can't help but mentally picture the poor guy fumbling in the dark for his glasses.

In his early days he could see pretty damn good, but now... he might want to look into cataract surgery.

All joking and metaphors aside, I do still find it incredibly sad that the prequels put such a divisive mark on Lucas's legacy. Even if they range from mediocre to poor (and don't get me wrong, they do) he doesn't deserve the obsessive fanboy rage that follows him around.

No wonder he trolled Star Wars fans with that "NNOOOOOO" in Return of the Jedi.

I prrsonally liked the prequels in final tinkering form. The six movies together with the Hayden ghost tell a very compelling story. While people want it to be about Luke mainly (and so did I at one point), when you accept the artists creative vision in its proper final form I think you get at least an 90% score.

The one I hate the most is the Boba Fett voice change.

The one I laugh at the fanboys the most is Han shoots first. Uh...Han was the only one that shot before. Change your tshirt logos people because Greedo didn't ever shoot second.

But "Han is now somehow changed from a rogue bad ass"...umm and why was that gun under the table again?

"Han Shot First" comes from the saying "Shoot First, Ask Questions Later" It doesn't mean the other party has to be trying to shoot as well. It means you take immediate action to end the situation (which is what Han did originally prior to the Special Editions)

But how can a movie set before Luke is even born be "about Luke mainly"? How would they have done that? Fill the thing with Jedi having intermittent visions of future Luke and his awesomeness?

There's also Luke's line to Artoo in Empire, you get "you were lucky to get out of there" in the SE's but "you're lucky you don't taste very good" in the original. And yes, most of these are alternate takes recorded during principal production.

Apparently the reason why certain dialogue changes crept into the SE's (in 1997, anyway ) is because they used the 70mm 6-track mixes as the basis for the discrete 5.1 audio and so the changes in those mixes were carried over into the SE's.
