I personally haven't tried one yet, but have been thinking about it as prices drop. It would be a good way to ensure I would never lose any data.

Anybody know anything about the "Dell" branded hard drives that they sell on their website? I can order from them through work (nothing out of pocket) but they have a very limited selection of other brands . . . i.e. I could get a 200 gig Seagate for $80 or a 250 gig Dell drive for $129. Should I just stick with the known brand and the smaller capacity?

Just back everything up and sync your trophies with the PSN server and try it out. If there is nothing out of pocket, try it....just maintain your backups.

I bought a 500gb samsung hard drive a couple of weeks ago and so far it is great. Odds are, if you drive is a "Dell" drive, it was probably made by seagate or western digital anyway and then licensed off.

Good luck.

Default help newly upodated firmware and hdd won't recognise back up usb hard drive now???

Hi newbie here rapidly losing hair as:

I’ve just replaced my original PS3 Fujistu 40 GB HDD with a Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 2.5" Internal SATA Hard Drive and I’m having issues with restoring my back up.

1. backed up all 28gb of data on a IDE 160 WD 1600AVJB using an usb sata/ide to usb adaptor after I had firstly set up the ide back up drive as fat 32 with swissknife and back up went fine using PS3 menus all good. Then a week later my new hard drive for ps3 truned up and I replaced Hdd and switched on PS3, asked to format which it did formatted and then told me I needed a firmware update so I then downloaded firmware update 2.53 from internet as requested and all was going fine all done in 1.30mins - 1 hour back up - 10 m ins install and 20 mins to format and replace firmware.

2. The I went to restore back up data from my IDE drive using USB IDE/SATA adaptor lead and WD 160GB. Powered down ps3 attached power lead to HD then attached adaptor cable from HDD to PS3 USB port and powered back up. Then went to back up utility on menu and now ps3 won't recognize the usb hard drive . It just keeps asking me to insert media with back up on it what the heck is going on?? Won’t even recgonise it to back up on either as i've tried that also. Tried adaptor on laptop and all is fine all folders are still there [PS3] - [EXPORT] – [BACKUP] and all archive data is in back up folder. What I can't understand is PS£ found usb drive no problem at all for original back up a week ago when PS3 had 40GB HDD still in it and original 2.53 firmware setup??

Why won't it find the USB hard disk with back up data on it now it has the new 320GB HDD installed and another 2.53 firmware update any ideas?????

Please before I commit hari kari

I would first check to see if the USB ports will recognize other storage devices besides the one your Back up is on. Try plugging in a thumb/flash drive and see if it is recognized by the PS3. You can do this with the PS3 being on. If it does recognize the other drive try plugging in your hard drive you have the back up on (with the PS3 still on). You should see the drive as an option in the Music, Picture and Video sections of the XMB. If you do not see the drive under these options then there is some other issue. Last thing I would try is removing the new HDD in the PS3 and re-inserting it and reformating it again. Then try to see if your external drive is seen by the PS3. If that fails then Call Sony for help.

Anyone else's HDD screws seem like they have fused in place? Mine are RIDICULOUS and I have not been able to loosen tham at all! I have my 320GB HDD ready to rock, but the 60GB will not yield.

3 questions:

-What's the RPM for the original drive on the Motorstorm 80gig model ?

-Is there a limit of RPM for a replacement drive ? ex 7200 ....

-Will a new drive make the PS3 less noisy ?

What size screwdriver are you using? Using the proper size screwdriver and a little wrist (a little harder than opening a bottle of soda) had mine coming off unstripped

tried a #00 and #000, but they were made in china. I bought a real precision set yesterday like I had been intending to do for awhile.

The largest phillips head in this set (available at Walmart for under $6) did the trick for me

These were unbelievable. Wouldn't budge, even with a screw extractor set. I ended up using a 1/8" bit and drilling the heads off two of the 4 screws.

When I got my 40GB PS3 I was pondering doing a swap but didn't, thinking I wouldn't need the space. I have no videos on my PS3. No music. No extras. Just game data. I have under 10GB spare... I wish I had now.

Like PV said. All you need is an external drive to back it up to. I just did my 60GB and it had info all the way back to the first day I set it up.

The ONLY think I know I lost was my Motorstorm : Pacific Ridge save data.

Default HD upgrade: Western Digital WD3200KT Caviar 320GB or Scorpio

has anyone used the WD 320Gb Caviar model yet? or just stick with the scorpio model? any major diffs on the two models?
I have a MGS 40gb lim ed on the way and plan to upgrade. already upgraded a regular 80gb model to the scorpio 320gb but was just wondering if the caviar model is better, equal to, etc
thanks in advance
