I understand that. I just didn't know how much of the image would have to be cropped in order to stabilize certain shots. Would there have been any image wobbling when the films first came out in theaters?

The medium of film projection alone would guarantee a certain amount of instability, what with the ream of celluloid shuttling through the gate at 24 frames per second. Same applies to a brand new transfer of the original elements, as even if the film itself isn't shrunken or warped a brand new pin-registered or edge-guided scan won't always be enough to guarantee a completely rock-steady image on its own.

The vagaries of transferring skittish analogue to precisely conformed digital are what they are, and sometimes the lateral movement is actually baked into the original optical composite on titles or VFX shots, so even the world's steadiest scan of that material would still need some work after the fact to stabilize it e.g. I've seen some 4K restorations recently (can't remember the titles) that had quite wobbly-looking opticals.

Think of Jurassic Park- people literally moaned and groaned when the 3D restoration stabilized the opening titles.

I was watching Empire Strikes Back late last night and something was wobbling throughout the end titles. Might have been me but it probably was the titles. Special Edition titles, no less.

I've always noticed the original trilogy's end titles wobbling since the VHS days, part of the character of the movies

Knowing our luck, it'll probably be the announcement that Hayden will be playing Anakin's ghost in The Last Jedi.

I'm fine with that.
And before anyone says anything... I grew up with Star Wars when there were only TWO Star Wars movies!

I'm going to steer well clear of the internet when a trailer is announced, well, certain websites anyway...
wait, I already do...
I don't want to be spoiled on anything Spider-Man/Marvel/Star Wars related...
I like going in not expecting anything.

I don't believe Beneath the Dome was ever released by itself, if I'm not mistake, it is on the Blu-Ray Bonus Disk.
Ultimate Lightsaber was: https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-84850-.../dp/B0007YDCK4
It came with a DVD that showed how to fight using a lightsaber and 2 episodes of the Clone Wars. I believe the first series. Not the CG one. I may be wrong, I never actually watched it. I've had it all these years though...

There is someone I talked to who actually thinks The Force Awakens isn't a Star Wars movie. He said,
Quote:
I am fairly well educated in the development and mythology of Star Wars. Perhaps the issue is that I'm just as much a fan of George Lucas as I am of Star Wars, and I understand the story that he was trying to tell. To me, Star Wars is not Star Trek or Marvel or DC comics. (All of which are great, by the way; not a DC fan, but there's nothing wrong with them.) Disney doesn't seem to get that you can't just bring in a new writer to take over, no matter how much he or she says they love Star Wars. I don't know that I could. There's one, maybe two people I would trust to continue Lucas' legacy, and J.J. Abrams (whose work I do enjoy, generally) is not one of them.

Lucasfilm was behind this film, that's true. But today's Lucasfilm is not the Lucasfilm we once knew. LFL is now an extension of Disney, whose CEO, Kathleen Kennedy, answers directly to Bob Iger. When Lucas was in charge, he didn't answer to anyone but his employees and shareholders. Star Wars was created as a singular vision by a man with a story to tell, and now movies with the Star Wars name are being assembled by committee to appeal to whomever the Disney boardroom thinks are the core fans. They showed this when they rejected Lucas' story treatment on the grounds that they were "making it for the fans".

George Lucas never compromised on his vision. He told the story he needed to tell, the way he needed to tell it, and created the greatest space fantasy of all time. TFA is a pale, commercialized imitation of a modern classic. It's fun, and there are some interesting moments in it. But throwing a few X-wings and lightsabers into it does not make it a Star Wars film.
What should I tell him?

Tell him Kasdan also wrote it, and that he also worked on Empire which is often considered the best of the Star Wars films.

R2-D2: Beneath the Dome was indeed a stand-alone retail release. I personally remember buying it from Sam Goody's, back when that chain existed.

Also, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't on the "Complete Saga" BD box either.
