Well yeah. I am taking two opposing possibilities to eliminate any comparison to the main point.

Kind of like sayin...you can have a black car in a crash...a white car in a crash. Either way it had nothing to do with the fact that the car got demolished.

This isn't like the Salkinds selling the Superman film rights to the Cannon Group.

That's one of the tragic byproducts of this whole will he/won't he allow the original versions to be released -- namely a growing indifference to the whole shebang among people like us. We started off as huge fans, then grew increasingly disturbed by Lucas's tinkering and revisionist intransigence, and have finally arrived at this moment in history, which we celebrate with little more than a defeated, collective shrug.

These movies deserved better. Film history deserved better. It bums me right the hell out.

Remember what George Smiley says about Karla in Tinker Tailor?

"He's a fanatic, and the fanatic is always concealing a secret doubt."

I think Lucas is playing the long game here, hoping that eventually almost no one even remembers (let alone cares about) the original versions. He won't release them again because he's worried that -- if the two are allowed to exist side-by-side a la Blade Runner -- it'll be patently obvious that the special editions brought almost nothing to the table. That's why I'm starting to think the rumours about a certain clause in the contract are correct.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer on the 40th anniversary. But I'd like nothing more than to go home and put on Star Wars without either (a) watching an ancient upscaled laser disc transfer or (b) having to hear that ludicrous Krayt dragon imitation that now seems to come out of Alec Guinness.

I wouldn't let my best friend borrow any of my BDs let alone a friend.

I did that once and got back some discs looking like they'd been attacked by a cheese grater. Not cool.

I only loan my Blu's out to two specific friends I trust eternally. They know to take care of my property. Haven't had a single problem.

Dude took care of my stuff after I made him buy me another copy of said DVD which was scratched so badly that it kept skipping and breaking up.

I let someone borrow an iPod once, the screen had cheeto dust embedded into it when I got it back.

That sucks, although in his defense discs taste better with salsa.

He's a bigger fan than I am. He's read just about every Star Wars book and owns tons more memorabilia than I do. He works a ton and has a social life, buying movies isn't at the top of his to-do list I guess.

That's because I have had experience during the VHS and DVD stays. You should have seen some of the DVDs that came back when I worked at Blockbuster for 2.5 years.
