Default PS3 Audio Output

Hey guys,
Hoping someone can help. I have my PS3 hooked up to the t.v. with an HDMI cable, and have an optical cable hooked up to the receiver for surround sound. The problem, I can only either play through the receiver, or through the t.v., and every time I want to switch from one to the other I have to go to the system settings. Does this sound right? Of course I like the surround sound, but it's not always feasable to have the sound really loud so once in awhile it's nice to just turn on the t.v. and not worry about the receiver.

Ideas?

everytime you want to use a different connection wether its changing the audio or video, you have to go to the xmb.

What type of audio can you not get with optical or can you get them all?

Optical doesn't have enough bandwidth for Linear PCM (lossless) 5.1 or 7.1 audio.

I just thought I would point out that optical cables have the bandwidth for lossless audio (up to a certain point), I am guessing that they decided not to allow them to transmit because of equipment that is already out there that would allow people to make a digital copy of the hi-def audio.

Anyway could you run an audio out of your receiver to the TV so you could use the TV speakers that way? I know some receivers don't decode the digital audio for a tape out, but I thought I would throw it out there.

im sure you can but wouldnt you have to turn on the receier anyway? i would just run the analog stereo cables that the ps3 came with to the tv.

Yes but wouldn't that also require changing settings on the PS3?

I am in the same situation as you. I have found a way to do this, but you may lose quality in doing so. Run HDMI from the PS3 to the tv like you have it now. Set the PS3 to output audio through HDMI. Then run opitcal cable from your TV to your receiver. Now, any audio that comes out of your tv (via optical) you can choose to play with the receiver. If you want audio from tv, turn the receiver off and the volume up on the tv. Others on here may have a better solution, but this will somewhat get around having to change setting everytime.

What I did with mine was connect the HDMI to the TV and audio setting of the PS3 to send Audio through the HDMI. Then my TV had a Optical output. I simply connected the optical out from the TV to the Receiver and it works fine. So I don't have to use my receiver to hear sound unless I turn it on. Most of the time I'm fine playing Games with regular 2-channel from the TV

This seems to be quite a common question.

I am in the same situation. I can't really use optical sound with SingStar, Guitar Hero or Rockband due to the lag, but I do want the sound to go through the receiver but using the supplied composite connectors but I am not able to do this with my receiver for some reason.

I might need to get me some component cables!

I never thought of this idea. I do have one question, how much quality are you losing by doing this. By running th optical directly to the receiver, you still have a pretty good sound, may not be high def, but its still good. I might try this, seeiing how my receiver doesn't have HDMI on it, but I am skeptical of the quality it will present.

It still sounds good. I mean I don't have the greatest sound system out there but I haven't really noticed any difference at all. Not that I turn my sound system way up, which I dont cause I don't usually get to turn it up much since my kids go to be early and if it is too loud it wakes them up.

So, so far so good for me. I just wish I thought of it sooner.

Maybe I am not reading the post right but why if you have a surround system would even want to use your tv speakers? If you want to play quieter just simply turn your sub off and turn down the system.

I don't always use my stereo when I am watching a movie or playing a game. Sometimes I simply want to use the TV speakers. Perhaps my wife is reading, my kids are sleeping or something else.

It really doesn't matter the reason, it sucks that they designed it this way. Every other component I have with optical or digital coaxial will do this.

I'm not even sure if my TVs' speakers even work. I can't stand the sound of TV speakers.
