Yes, there is that possibility. It would only make sense that he would have final say on what version of his movies better reflect his artistic intent and be released to the public.

Of course, nobody knows the exact content of the deal, but a final cut privilege clause shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

I’m skeptical if Lucas is the issue. Something in my gut tells me he doesn’t even care anymore and why should he?? After the sale to Disney it’s essentially not his property anymore. Also John Landis had mentioned at a Q&A thing a year or two ago that Lucas told him that Disney was restoring the originals if anyone wants to take his word with a grain of salt. Also Lucas had story ideas for TFA which were ultimately not used and eventually he just detached himself from it. Not to mention when he was in charge at least he was upfront about never releasing the originals. Disney/LFL have yet to really give a direct response on the matter (No I’m not counting what Kathleen Kennedy said a few months ago as that was not directly in response to the OUT). Just my two cents.

So... you’re perfectly happy with Lucas’s decision, but not because you actually agree with his decision; you just like knowing that it makes certain fans “overreact.” Right. Got it.

What exactly would be Lucas’s reason for not releasing the originals (assuming that was one of his demands)? Is he afraid most people would prefer them over the CGI Editions? I just can’t think of a single good reason. Imagine if Ridley Scott refused the original version of Blade Runner from being released because he only wanted The Final Cut to be in people’s memories.

At this point, yeah, because he probably knows that the people who REALLY care about Star Wars -- not just the casual fans who look like deer in the headlights when you mention "Han shot first" or "Jedi Rocks" -- would vastly prefer the original versions. I just wonder how big that number of people really is, and if Disney/LFL care enough to actually release those versions (or if they even can). Anyway, if it doesn't happen in 2020, I doubt it ever will.

That almost sounds like George knows the original versions are better and is keeping them from being released out of spite. I don’t understand that fear though. In this day and age I would think most people would prefer the CGI Editions. The more you riddle the screen with fake crap, the better.

I think the post-Lucas Lucasfilm wants to make it well established that the latest special editions are canon with the ST and that they're not disregarding George's preferred versions even though he's not in control anymore. They don't want to release the UOT at the moment and confuse things, especially with casual fans, or stir up shit between the hardcores. There was something that some inconsiderate morons spoiled in The Last Jedi thread that will only make sense with the special editions,
[Show spoiler] an appearance by Young Anakin Force ghost in TLJ
.

Also, if they wait till after Episode IX to release the theatrical cuts they can keep making money off the Saga and keep it in the public eye while they build up anticipation and plan out the next trilogy.

Well that's exactly why I don't think THAT many people really care about the original versions, because at this point the SEs have been the main way to watch these movies and people either don't notice or don't care. And if the market for the originals isn't all that big, then why would Disney/LFL/Fox care to go through the process of restoring/releasing them? I'm not saying they shouldn't release them, because obviously I want them, I'm just wondering if it's really worth it. I hope it would be.

Pretty much, yup. I used to dislike it too, but then I saw how disproportionately bent-out-of-shape some nerds still are over it, and now I see a weird, almost-perverse value in it.

And here I thought Star Wars was ALL "fake" and fictitious and completely made-up.

That someone would effectively ruin a piece of cinema history and then go out of their way to hide all traces of the original should piss off anyone who loves film. The anger towards Lucas isn't at all 'disproportionate'.

Agree with "A," disagree with "B." I want Disney to re-release the unaltered OT as much as anyone, but some of the responses I regularly see in this thread are positively hyperbolic, and out of proportion with the actual issue. People are dying in Africa and Puerto Rico, and this is our major existential concern, evidently, with George Lucas sometimes being equated roughly to a war-criminal by some folks here.

If they do end up doing the UOT then they need to fix all the bad scenes in space where you can see the wires and crop work. Seeing the OT without a lot of the FX fixes really is lame and I could only imagine how much worse it would be in HD. Would I like to have them sure but would I watch them much? Probably not. I can't see them doing this in HD since the ones that are out know are the films. But who knows.

This is a Blu-ray forum so it should be no surprise that people are focused on film here rather than current events. And being an internet forum, hyperbole is to be expected.

Lucas is a massive POS. He's not on the same level as people responsible for actual human suffering but he fully deserves all the hyperbolic insults leveled at him just the same.

To the best of my knowledge no one here is on the floor of the United Nations demanding for the UOT to be releases so your comparison is idiotic. This is a blu-ray forum so we are discussing it here.

Can you point to specific examples of Lucas being equated to a war criminal or is this just hissy-fit hyperbole on your part?

Let's shut down the forums. Discussing Blu-rays - or pretty much anything else - is pointless while children are starving in Africa!
