No, I do that too. I have a pile in the corner of video games, DVDs, and a few BDs that I don't use much anymore. Most are either upgrades or less frequented fare, though the stuff on top is just things I ran out of room for.

The OP asked what I do with all the retail packaging. Yes, I could have just told them I keep it out in the garage. Instead I thought it would be fun to give them the full monty. And god forbid someone does read my post, likes what they see, has the financial means and purchases several used Sony changers replicating what I've done. Oh yeah, also make sure to completely ignore the fact I provide a "practical" alternative. Did you not read the below?

When finding a disc to play they're going to their storage cabinet, grabbing the disc from the numbered sleeve that matches the Collection Number in DVD Profiler and inserting the disc into their single disc Blu-ray player. Done deal.

Storing the discs in sleeves can really save on space. Indexing the discs and numbering the sleeves accordingly also eliminates the need to ever resort the physical discs as all the browsing is being done in the digital realm. You purchase a new title on Blu-ray, add the title to DVD Profiler assigning the disc level profile the next available Collection Number, then dropping the physical disc in the next available numbered sleeve (which matches the Collection Number), rinse and repeat. It's a great system and has worked beautifully for me going back to the early years of the DVD format. I'm just using Sony changers rather than numbered sleeves.
I went out of my way when concluding my post to point out the "practical" alternative of using numbered sleeves rather than Sony changers. In fact, in my post prior to that one I highlight the use of sleeves sighting Hotandserious as an example to follow commenting that I'd mirror what they've done if I didn't own the Sony changers.

If my DVD's and Blu-ray's weren't stored for playback in Sony 400-Disc DVD/Blu-ray players I'd definitely attempt to replicate the above though in my case I'd just be numbering the sleeves as I have my collection indexed and do all my browsing (by whatever criteria) in the digital realm.
As for storing the retail packaging, yes it takes up room. And your point? I pointed out below that if push came to shove I'd have no problem throwing the retail packaging out (or selling the empty cases) with the exception of the slip covers, cover art and perhaps any custom packaging. If you're willing to part with it I'd hardly call the process of disposing of it impractical. My trash gets picked up every week. Sometimes less is more. I also pointed out in the pictures I posted that several of the storage containers in the garage were empty and that I could move the retail packaging I do have on display out to the garage if I wanted.

I also keep some of the empty packaging for my Blu-ray collection inside the house as I had a few empty cabinets I wasn't using for anything. Half of the storage containers in the pic above are empty though, so all the retail packaging could be stored out in the garage if I wanted with plenty of room to spare.
It should also be pointed out that there is far more flexibility when it comes to just storing the retail packaging. When the discs are being stored elsewhere the retail packaging no longer needs to be stored in a temperature controlled environment where space may be at a premium. Since the early years of the DVD format the majority of my retail packaging has been stored in a garage. It's no worse for wear as a result. When storing the discs elsewhere the retail packaging also doesn't need to be stored in such a way that you're still able to browse your collection by the packaging. It can just be stacked in boxes for example making more efficient use of the space you do have in many cases. You also wouldn't need to store the retail packaging on your own property necessarily. For a number of years I didn't have a garage and stored the retail packaging at my parents house as they had plenty of room in their garage. There's also the fact that not everyone will have a collection the size of mine. Some will have smaller collections. Others will have much larger collections. Again, what's your point? Whatever the case may be, if you're looking to save on space in a substantial way storing your discs in something other than the retail packaging is a great way to go and hardly impractical. This was the driving point of my post, but please, focus on the fact I'm using Sony changers which are no longer made and expensive on the used market.

I store mine in an abandoned barn about an hour from my apartment as any sensible collector should.

Funny post. :-) And here's a nice segue. One of my friends actually stores his retail packaging in a barn. No joke. He keeps all the discs in the house though. Would be pretty inconvenient to have to go out to the barn every time him and his wife wanted to watch a Blu-ray. :-P They're indexing their discs in DVD Profiler as I am, but using numbered sleeves. Helped them learn the ins and outs of the software. They went from having DVD's and Blu-ray's lining several walls from floor to ceiling to a single cabinet with enough room left over to last several years based on their current buying habits. Made the wife especially happy. It's a great alternative if the retail packaging is starting to take over one's home. They still have a small area with some of their custom packaging on display though.

I was just letting members know, particularly new ones, that your method/solution is not doable without spending a lot of money. That's all. Sometimes I think people are more sensitive online than in reality.

See, I saw "multiple 400-disc Blu-Ray changers" and thought 'hey, that seems like a really cheap solution!' Had you not said anything I'd have never realised that might cost a significant amount of money.

I, for one, thank you for posting. It is a pretty sweet setup, and one I would consider if I had the means and was able. Unfortunately, your solution wont work for me, so I will continue doing what works for me.

Discgear Selector:

Each one stores 100 (or 80 or 120 depending on the capacity) discs, and is about 16" long. I have two of these that I used to store back-up CD-Rs on. When I upgraded to hard drives for back-up, I now keep my recorded DVDs in them.

Not sure if they still make them, or what models are still available.

Such an interesting thread....there's no right or wrong answer to it. It's all preference based. The solution changes as the collection grows. I'm glad my collection isn't as big as some of yours just for the fact that I wouldn't have the space for it....give it time I guess.

I currently use these Snap-n-store boxes:
https://www.amazon.ca/Snap-N-Store-S...s=snap-n-store

They aren't perfect, but they work for now. Wish they held 25 each (not 26) cuz the bookshelf that they sit on isn't the same depth and it hangs over. Also wish they were sized only for blu-rays, not DVD's.

Some have reported sleeves sticking to blu-ray discs and leaving spots. If you're going for sleeves, buy higher quality sleeves specially designed for blu-ray storage. Don't buy any old cheap brand.

I may start storing BDs in the attic, although that's a last resort as I really don't want to have to go up and down the ladder just to get a movie.

I don't have any product links to give you as I haven't purchased anything myself, but I can give you the discussion thread where we were having conversation about the discs sticking to the sleeves (with pictures on the first few pages): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...=128389&page=6

The recommendation was something called discsox pro sleeves, though I don't know if they store art. There is also a recommendation for a barrel grabber but I'm not into that.

I have one 3-tiered metal display shelf (from a store I used to manage) for my blu-rays and HD-DVDs. When I run out of space then I make myself sell some before I can buy more. Helps me keep from getting too many titles, which I did with DVDs.

It's kind of a cheat because I keep my small DVD collection, mostly TV sets, in another room...or I rip them to my computer. But I want to keep my HD media under the 400 mark.

Probably doesn't help the OP, just thought I'd add.

Is anyone familiar with this brand of slim cases?

https://www.slim-disc.com/BLURAY-sleeve

You can get 200 for £60. Holds (most) artwork and 2 disc's each.

There's also these

https://mmdesign.com/Movies/Sleeves/...oly-sleeve.php

They look to do the same job, 2 discs and most artwork.

But good lord, $20 for 25 of them?

These thin sleeves are what I'm most interested in for organizing but don't want to just throw money away.

My solution was to switch from bookshelves to dressers. The Malm from Ikea has drawers deep enough to put DVDs and blu-rays in spine-up, like a filing cabinet. Each drawer holds four columns of movies with space on the side for more movies, remotes, cables or junk.

I've been buying ten disc cases and consolidating lately. I create box sets of a director or type of film... godzilla, laurel & hardy, bogart, etc... I can fit ten discs in the space of two that way and the covers fit inside the front of the case. If it gets any worse, I'll do what I did with my DVDs... mono price sleeves and aluminum cases.
