the system update is completely updated. I tried to do that and it said it's already updated.

Try turnning off the PS3, unplugging the HDD from the power & PS3, then booting up the PS3. Then, once the PS3 is fully on & ready plug in the HDD but DO NOT plug it into the PS3. Wait about a minute or so for the HDD to fully power up and then plug it into the PS3.

If that doesn't work, turn everything off again like above and plug the HDD in first, wait a minute or so, and then turn on the PS3 with the USb cable already plugged into the PS3.

You may also need to download an FDISK tool and blow away any hidden partitions on the HDD. There might be a very small partition that's causing some problems, just do a search on download.com for fdisk.

I have a wd mybook 120 GB external HDD that i had trouble with my ps3 recognizing, but after i reformatted it to FAT32, I have had no trouble. I had to download a special program to format to FAT32 because my computer wouldn't do it with the larger HDD.

I had this problem before. Be sure to format fat32 and be sure its the FIRST PARTITION. I had a drive with fat32 and mac hpfs and if the PS3 saw the mac's partition first it would immediately ignore the external drive.

If you are only using one partition verify its indeed the first and there is no stray partitions really there... use a mac or fdisk to be sure.

I clicked to search, just on a whim, but it didn't pick up anything.

Why is it not picking this up?

I have a folder on there named PS3 and a subfolder with VIDEO and it's not even showing up.

Can someone help me?
Silly comment, but have you tried doing a VIDEO folder without it being under the PS3 folder? I don't have my drive in front of me so forgot how I have it set up. I don't remember if I had to do PS3 and then nest MUSIC and VIDEO under it or not.

You get an external USB drive, format it to FAT32 via swissknife or any program that you can use. You then need to put certain folders in, MUSIC, VIDEO, and PICTURES (don't quote me on the exact way to spell them, but I know they need to be capitalized). Then you just plug it in, and it should recognize it. Once I get home and look at my drive I can tell you how I've got mine set up. I'm at work right now with absolutely no access to it or my thumb drive.

i don't want to start a new thread for this, so i'll post here.

I just bought a 60gb external HD. It is formatted FAT32. It works fine when i plug it into my computer, but when i plug it into my PS3 it keeps turning off and on, and I can't read it on my PS3.

Sounds like it might be a power issue, but I can only plug it in through USB, there is no ouput for a power adapter. Has anyone else run into this issue?

I might just have to return this HD and purchase a different one...

Does your adapter that came with your external hard drive have 2 USB plugs on it to be plugged in? One would be for Data while the other for power.

I have 320gb WD passbook HD and I didnt have to do anything to it. The PS3 recognized it right away..however one of my PCs did not..the problem was that I was using an old USB cable when connecting to my PC.

When the PS3 sees the HD, you'll see the name of the external HD on the XMB menu.

The folders in CAPs are not actually needed, as if you hit triangle on the drive and hit display all it will go into the root director of the hard drive instead of looking for a specific folder name.

Dreaming In Blu, the chances are there is nothing wrong with either your hard drive or PS3: it could be a matter of placing your video files in VIDEO folder. Try that.
