I've forgotten if any of the bonus features in the below set covered the three video games. Enter The Matrix, THE MATRIX: Path of Neo (IMO superior to the sequels), THE MATRIX Online. The latter which continued the story after the Trilogy. I'd have to look on DVDCompare.net
I don’t think I’ve seen that set before. I can’t remember the last time I opened up my BD set.

IIRC the DP or someone closely involved with the film stated that camera filters were used to create the green hue seen in several scenes set inside the Matrix and I believe that the main source of the blues seen in the future scenes are blue color gels which were attached to light sources. I imagine that the yellow/brown seen in the DVD is a result of the telecine colorist attempting to "naturalize" a film where the green is baked-in at the negative stage.

Kind of reminds me of John Carpenter's Vampires, the whole film was given a heavy red push photochemically but for several scenes red graduated filters were used during shooting in order to create a gradient effect. When the original negative was scanned and the French and German Blu-rays came out, they didn't apply the red tint to the whole film (which they should have) so everything looked life-like, except the scenes that were shot with graduated filters still showed red at the top of the screen which stretched downwards and disappeared near the center of the image.

But yeah, when it comes to The Matrix: real world scenes = blue and scenes set in The Matrix = green. This is what the creators say and this is how it appears in the prints. The DVD is wildly inaccurate to say the least despite what some may claim, and the Blu-ray (while far from ideal) is a much more faithful representation of the film than many may think and I'm expecting the UHD to more closely resemble the Blu-ray than the DVD.

I seem to remember the DVD and Blu-ray sets both had the cinematic cutscenes from Enter the Matrix at the least. The other games I'm fuzzy on as I never owned either set though.

ASC read is really great. Detailed and sets the right expectations from the transfer.

So is it the DVD that's in error, then?

Are there screenshot comparisons anywhere?

Which DVD release? A (OG cinematic color timing) or B (digitally revised color timing)?

Neither of those have the original colors. At the moment, only the original 35mm prints do.

Are you sure about that? I saw this in the theater three times and then turned around and bought the VHS and DVD. They both had a similar color timing to what I saw in the theater.

Jupiter Ascending is one of those films that turns out bad but then accidentally becomes good by the end of it. It’s just a spectacular mess, you have to see it once in your lifetime. It’s the Battlefield Earth of this decade.

Did not know this. Thanks for the info.

Given that the Wachowskis retimed the last transfer to look as it did then the UHD - presuming their involvement - is bound (heh) to hew closer to that look than not, but there's still a myriad of problems with that transfer which I hope get rectified for the UHD.

For me it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. The old DVD is too brown but the newer transfer pushes the green and the contrast waaaaay too much, it's very much a product of its time (like the 2004 transfers for the Star Wars trilogy) so one hopes that the UHD transfer will be more nuanced.

Checked new transfers of movies that were shot on the same film stock. It should look quite grainy overall.

What are some examples of those other movies?

Positive. The DVD was just your typical telecine and it doesn't have the colors/qualities of film.

As mentioned there are scenes missing the green hue that were there theatrically and sometimes the green shows up as yellow in some shots but disappears in others, even if they are from the same scene.

35mm (appears to be a raw scan):

Print being projected (to give a rough idea of how it looks):

The green is pushed too far overall on the Blu-ray although on prints there are some scenes that are greener, and the contrast is way too much.

If the issues with the Blu-ray are fixed then we'd basically end up with the original color timing. The best option for me would be if Warner color-matched the film with an answer print like they have been doing with their latest remasters whenever possible.

Another thing on the 35mm colour, there's a scan of the trailer around. Obviously not properly timed but it gives you an idea of what it originally looked like.

I'm glad this is coming but i can't help but feel like a better idea would be to hold off for the sequels and inevitable box set. I'd like to replace the Ultimate set with a 4K version, and i can see them milking it for every cent they can.

^It doesn't give an idea of what it looked like. Colors are completely off. Not much different from that 35mm scan (so-called 2.0) with yellow faces. The closest thing is the blu-ray still.

Never judge a look by the trailer.
