The holiday special was recorded on videotape, right? So, no possibility for HD.

That sucks. I was hoping for film. I’m thinking the copy I have is going to have to do.

I downloaded a version of the Holiday Special that is the best I've seen. Obviously not HD but more than good enough.

I never thought I'd see anyone on the internet asking for a blu-ray of the holiday special

It's better than TPM and AOTC, so I can believe it.

TPM and AOTC are Citizen Kane compared to the Holiday Special.

I disagree with you for one key reason: The Star Wars Holiday Special knew exactly what it was, and didn't have any pretension to being an integral part of the franchise. It was merely a quick cash-in in the form of the ever-present variety show that the 1970s were chock-full of, and everyone involved understood that.

In contrast, the prequels were trying to wedge themselves into the mythology of the OT (to the point of Lucas destructively ret-conning them with the Special Editions) despite having little or nothing except for flashy CG to make them anything other than bad fan-fiction that happened to be by the original creator.

Of course said creator's skills had grossly deteriorated by that time (they were already in decline by 1983's ROTJ) and all the secondary contributors behind the scenes that helped make the first 2 films truly great had long since left and been replaced by "yes men", so that might have something to do with it.

If they ever did release it, they need to include a bonus feature on how to fight the frizzies.

I'm not sure how, but I'm pretty certain that it involves people building transportation to serve people.

Agreed. The last truly great STAR WARS movie was released in 1980 - a long time ago.

Decided to watch Rogue One, the original trilogy and Awakens for the first time upscaled on my 4K panel. Although it’s the best they have ever looked they are in need of a remaster. I really hope we get a 4K release soon.

Well, the BDs of the original three are using 15 year old masters used for the 2004 DVD set. Disney is aware of this I'm sure and are just biding their time. My guess is that they are going to wait for Episode IX and then release everything all at once. I can't really complain about TFA and RO though as they look as good as a BD can look, but I'd sure take proper UHDs of them.

Yeah for sure. TFA and RO look fine. I usually watch the original trilogy BD’s a few times a year. Last time was on my projector and they look much better on my panel. I think I’m going to hold off watching again until we get a 4K set.

I'd also welcome UHDs of Episodes I-III, but TPM needs a proper 4K scan since it was shot in 35mm. Since II-III were shot at 2K digitally new 2K scans would be fine once you throw in HDR.

Agreed. They all have potential to look great. They look so flat on BD. We will get them, it’s just a matter of when.

For the umpteenth time: never gonna happen with TPM. It was shot on film (with a few HD pickups) but virtually every shot of the movie has some kind of digital effect, this is why when they did the 3D conversion they returned to the 2K files rather than the subsequent filmout because the 2K is the highest generation source containing the finished effects. If they go back to the physical camera negative it would contain no VFX so everything would need to be scanned back in and the CG re-rendered and re-composited, and seeing as ILM can't run the packages any more they would need to recreate a hundred million dollars worth of VFX from scratch. If they go back to the filmout negative derived from the 2K files and scan that in then the VFX would be in there but you'd have no more than 2K resolution baked in, plus whatever image loss is incurred from the digital to analogue to digital stages you've just gone through so it makes more sense to just cut out those stages altogether and go straight to the 2K files.

TPM will be a 2K upscale just like the other two, should they ever reach 4K UHD.
