There are some yes but for me that’s beside the point. Not having the choice over which version to watch is the real issue and is a revision of history which I cannot condone.

Addition of the subtitle? That's not good at all; now people just call the movie by the wrong name all the time.

Thrown Room sounds like something a rock star would ask their manager for when booking a hotel suite, "I'd like a dual aspect room with balconies for easy access TV tossing ..."

Not a problem. Frames can be reconstructed digitally, that's been a thing for at least 15 years or so. The CRI material that was removed from the original negative during the restoration (having faded so badly in the interim) could be newly imbibed with colour using scans of the YCM separation masters. Basically there's nothing wrong with the original materials that modern technology couldn't remedy, the question is simply one of LFL/Disney ever having the will to do it.

“A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition].” I don’t think so, George! There are plenty of fans that will ensure that the Superior Editions last a very long time.

Sweet baby Jawas, I just got done watching 4K77 and it's a thing of beauty. The detail and texture is just phenomenal, I've never been a fan of the over-processed Lowry HD transfers (which are approaching 15 years old) but that a 4K master of a freakin' theatrical print can beat those HD transfers from negative all ends up shows how crappy they really were. Lowry have done some great things since then but SW was not their finest hour.

I love the grain on it too, it's interesting that the 4K77 site advises people that the grain can be quite intense and is best viewed on a projector because of how they gently roll off such HF information, but viewed in 4K on a 4K TV (with sharpness set where it should be ) the grain is delicately fine for the most part. The numerous opticals make it look chunkier and noisier, no doubt, but even they don't go overboard with it and that we're looking at a print - a copy of a copy of a copy - means that grain is actually softened somewhat. The very capacious HEVC encode also helps to make sure that the grain is rendered as transparently as possible to the source.

The colour veers towards a greeny cast with other shots looking a bit bluey but that's photochemical timing for you, and that it's from a print (which has very high gamma) means that the black levels lack depth and shadow detail, along with the highlights looking very bright and blown out. Those are observations though, not complaints, as this thing is still a bloody miracle.

Every time I've watched Star Wars in recent years it's sent me to sleep, I guess through over-familiarity but also because of the way that the SE slows the movie down owing to all the little scene extensions, extra scenes and so on. But this original cut really moves, I mean it's not some hyper-kinetic Michael Bay film all of a sudden but it knows not to dwell for too long and, as the SE trailer told us, this really WAS like seeing it again...for the first time.

Bravo to George Lucas for being the mastermind behind this peerless achievement in popular cinema. And **** you George Lucas for being such a colossal tool by suppressing the restoration of the original version for so long, and it ain't over yet. Still, if it were to never happen then I'd be good with 4K77 for the rest of my days.

Does the green cast make the Skywalker lightsaber look green, or is it more of the white-blue it's supposed to be?

And how is the sound? Is it the coveted mono, or is it one of the stereo mixes that showed up after the first showing?

Can’t wait for Disney to give us 4Ks of the SEs with Atmouse.

“Hey George we’re putting out a 4K release of the whole saga, you wanna do an interview or something?”
“Belay that order Kathy, I’ve got some tweaking to do...”

Blue! While I think a seafoam lightsaber would be neat, it should only be that way on purpose.

Couldn't agree more. So grateful for the 4K77, and it's all I ever watch anymore. Even when viewing the whole Saga in order (a scenario in which I thought I'd go back to the current 2011 iterations), I can't bring myself to do it. Now that ROGUE ONE exists, the 1977 STAR WARS doesn't have to follow SITH anymore, and works much better in its older form. Even more fun: I've been having various groups of friends over to show them the 1977 original, and they've all been blown away at how much better it plays. Some are seeing it for the first time in twenty years, some have NEVER seen it in the original form (young whippersnappers), and I love being able to spread the wonder.

To be honest, stuff like the lightsabers, laser blasts and so on look really pale throughout the whole presentation. (V1.0)

It’s nice that Spielberg is able to come to his senses, and so quickly too. Too bad George lacks this character trait.
