I just mentioned this to someone else, but have you thought of getting a UHD player with good SDR down-conversion? Then you can watch the new masters without upgrading the ol' telly.
I briefly had a Sony UBP-X800 late last year (I returned it when it became apparent that UHDs didn't look good on my set). I wasn't at all impressed with the SDR down-conversion. My memory is that the image was dim and de-saturated.

I'm still happy with BD releases at the moment. Sure, some of the big studios are ignoring us with half-baked catalog releases, or none at all, but there's still much out there for me. I'm picking up Princess Bride from Criterion tomorrow, and getting City Slickers & the Man in the Iron Mask from Shout for Christmas (along with Arrow's 12 Monkeys).

I have been flirting off and on with future proofing by picking up 4K releases for both new movies and catalog releases (you'll see I have some in my collection). Mostly, I do this when there's some kind of exclusive packaging involved. As long as it includes a top-notch, quality Blu-ray, I'm not against it.
