If it's one thing Disney is all about it's the almighty $! I'm sure they factored in releasing the original movies when purchasing them for billions of dollars! They faced a setback due to the fact that FOX had rights to the first film in perpetuity so what did they do? THEY BOUGHT FOX!!
These movies will get released properly by Disney!! There's no doubt about it.

You're ignoring the actual circumstances here. First off, "very long time" is relative; Disney has only owned Lucasfilm for six years. I wouldn't even say that that is a "very long time". But in buying Lucasfilm, they didn't immediately obtain the full rights to the original trilogy. That wasn't going to happen until 2020, which changed when Disney bought Fox, a deal which was only finalized this year.

Now, yes, technically, they could have done a release prior to obtaining all the rights, but they would be giving profit away to Fox for doing nothing, so that was obviously never going to happen, especially when they could focus on creating new content from which they would draw all the profits. Disney has owned Fox for less than 2 months, which is only a "very long" time if you are a child waiting for a birthday. That single change in circumstances would be the last thing holding them back from a business standpoint, thus explaining why they would "suddenly" change their position. Point being, Disney's reasons for not releasing it in the last six years were not the same as Lucas's reasons for not releasing it in the preceding 15.

Well, yeah, it wouldn't be a real Star Wars release if fans couldn't find something to complain about.

And those people can stick with their hacked up Lucas copies that they already own!
Personally, I could care less if there are ZERO extras on the set, only 1 audio track, 1 subtitle track, and a menu that only has an option to PLAY. Fill the entire 50gb blu-ray disc with the movie only and I would be jumping for joy!!

I don't want the Holiday Special as a "bonus".... we all know that it's worthy of its own Special Edition treatment!!

This times 1billion.
I’m guessing we will get a I-IX altered boxed set before a sniff of any unaltered news.

Or Disney could maybe do their jobs and get everything right the first time. As a consumer is that too much to ask?

This seems quite possible to me too, that's why I hesitate to say the release is imminent. I could imagine them releasing only the special editions, and then a year or two later doing a full release. I could also imagine them releasing both at the same time -- a cheaper box set and a more deluxe box set. It kinda depends; one way, they get profit from people buying the cheaper one and then buying the bigger one, the other way they get more sales of the bigger one because it will be closer to the initial marketing blitz. I'm sure they have their number crunchers figuring out which would be more profitable, but I have no idea what their ultimate decision would be there. The one thing I can say for sure is that never releasing it results in lower profits than ever releasing it. Given that, you'd have to convince me that Disney has some goal which they would place above profit (similar to Lucas, who specifically valued his current creative vision as more important than profit) to convince me that the release is not inevitable.

George Lucas has been changing the movies since before Disney bought it. Lucas is still probably stopping the changes.

Vader's "NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" would sound amazing in Atmos.

I think that would be the way to go. Release a standard boxed set with the SE's, but an all inclusive (=expensive!) boxed set that includes copies of both versions!

They've released the existing movies multiple times while Disney owned Lucasfilm, but did not own Fox, so the "giving profit away to Fox for doing nothing" happened anyway.

Don’t..hold...breath.
The originals won’t be surfacing anytime soon. Maybe they silently show up in digital libraries, but even that is a stretch.
Disney is making good money on SW, new and old. They don’t need to cater to a few ravenous message board fans.
I know on these boards folks tend to lose touch with reality and the whole, wide world of Joe Average. People still buy DVDs. A lot of them. If Disney wanted to release them, they have had ample opportunity. They have not.
This topic, for the foreseeable future, will only exist in ravenous fan’s message board posts.
Exhibit A is this thread. Just go back and read it. It lightyears more entertaining than the UOTs.

And how would you know that. You make a statement but don't offer a source, no proof, just you say not true. The director of the Last Jedi says he saw a total restoration of ''A new hope'' and he says we may see a public showing in 4k. Which means to me we could see a 4K disk this year or early in 2020.n 4K physical disk needs a huge boost in this format and I can't think of another title that could do that with the world wide fan base Star Wars has. That could help save physical media. Disney!, step it up.

I totally understand what you are saying. Over the years I had pretty much given up hope of seeing them on blu-ray. Honestly though, with Disney owning it all now (with the recent acquisition of FOX) I really think it will become a reality sooner rather than later. Just a feeling that I have... could be wrong.
And if I'm wrong, then I still have the Harmy set and hope to add the 4k80 disc to my collection along with the 4k77 and 4k83!

I don’t think that’s what guamguy means.

They did multiple reissues of the existing 2011 discs, but never included a shred of new content.

In that regard, the only thing they really “gave away” to Fox was whatever extras they included with the digital release of ANH in 2015.
